Hi everybody,

friend of mine is short before her naturalization, actually and how she counted it's ready on Sept. 23rd. She wanted to know how long the process will take, a year, months??? Any Ideas? She lives in Colorado and her immigration is based on the marriage with an USC.

p.s. does she have to file N-400 form and wait for the interview appointment or she can go ahead and schedule the appoinment?

Thanks,

Lika

Lika,

First recommend that your friend use a date calendar that she can find online to double check her dates. If the application is even one day early, it will cause her a problem later on.

The N-400 is submitted first, with all the required evidence and the fees; it is sent to the Service Center. However, she should watch the timelines for her District Office to get an idea of how long her application will take. For us, we got a NOA of the receipt of the application, and one week later got an appiontment letter for the fingerprinting. Aprox 2 months later we received the interview notice which is set for later this month. Our total time is under six months, but this will vary by District Office.

Also important: after the interview (which, as you see above, she can not schedule herself), she will NOT be a US citizen until her oath ceremony. In some offices (like ours) you can get a same-day oath ceremony if you've passed your interview and your name checks are all complete. In some offices, you have to wait several months until an oath ceremony is scheduled. The agency will notify her by mail when her oath ceremony will be held. In the vast majority of cases, naturalization takes less than one year, sometimes significantly less.

It really fluctuates. I applied with my sister, and it only took her 6-7 months, while it took me over a year, that was in 2002. My dad applied in March of this year, and it only took him 2 months. Crazy!

This is in California.

I submitted my N-400 back on February 16th. I got the first NOA on April 18th to come in for the finger printing on April 28th. My second NOA letter was received on June 13th to come in for the interview and exam on June 27th. I received the last letter on July 8th to do the Oath this Friday the 21st.

The exam was so easy. And the person who did the interview, their English was worse than mine, that I had a hard time understanding what they were asking me sometimes and also for the questions for the verbal exam.
