Visited SSN Office Today.....Confused?

I went first thing this morning to the SSN office. I was fully prepared for the 'a K1 doesn't qualify'.... I printed all my proof from this site, including that internal memo we have posted here in the guides.

I get this woman who tells me I am not eligible. I then show her memo and explain...she finally said, she would run it through the system and if it accepts it, then i'm good... ????? I asked if I was already showing in the system, as I did not want for them to search for me manually (as I know this can take weeks!).... anyways, she did her thing... I applied for myself and my son, who is here with me on a K2.

When she was done plugging away, she said I was approved and should get a card in 7-10 days, but the Homeland Security 'system' rejected her attempt on my son's app, saying he needs a I-688 or I-766 form?

I didn't make a big deal about it, as I assume she knew what she was talking about as then system generated that message, and I started thinking, that maybe my son can't apply until I after I file my AOS/EAD/AP etc? I recall POE telling me that I have an Alien #, but that my son does not rec've one until after I marry and apply for AOS.

Does anyone have any experience with SSN and their children? (my son is 5 years old)

If I do need to complete additional forms, what are they?

Thanks

I believe others have posted the same situation - that a K-2 is not eligible for a SSN until they have an EAD or a green card. The K-1 is eligible for a SSN as some states require a SSN to issue a marriage license - the purpose of the K-1 visa. The K-2 visa is derivative of the K-1 and so doesn't qualify for a SSN until they have actual documents on their own to show they are eligible. So, apply for an EAD for him when you apply for his and your AOS and he can use that to get a SSN.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

thanks for the info :)

I thought EAD is work authorization? Can a 5 year old apply for that?

I thought I would have to apply the 485, 325 and AP for him?

I was just going to duplicate all the forms for him? So do children apply for all the same AOS forms as the K1?

Thanks

I didn't apply EAD for my son (K4), I though it was silly to do since he's really young :D So I am applying now for his AOS. Currently he's using TIN (for tax purposes) while his AOS is pending
