not quite sure, but I think the K2 needs the EAD(minimum or GC) - I know I didn't apply for my daughter's last year until she had that but I forget the precise reasoning.

Sapphire - what's the big rush getting a back account in your own name - if that's the only need for the SSN right now, you should be fine even if it takes a few more weeks......no worries :) I do totally understand you want to get things into order and have the normal things of course.

Sapphire - what's the big rush getting a back account in your own name - if that's the only need for the SSN right now, you should be fine even if it takes a few more weeks......no worries :) I do totally understand you want to get things into order and have the normal things of course.

No rush really for a joint account. I just really like to spend using a debit card and want a place to keep all my money here. When I carry cash I tend to spend it really fast. And, I'm just incurring a lot of fees withdrawing cash from my Canadian account and using my Canadian credit card. Until we actually have shared expenses (which we don't since we live at his parents house) we don't need a joint account just yet. Eventually we'll have one, I mean probably when I get my SSN. We have one in Canada because we are paying for our wedding there. It's more for normalcy purposes I guess.

Just wanted to update and let everyone know that I got my SSN today.

So it only took about 9 business days!

So perhaps manual processing isn't so bad afterall!

That's great Sapphire!! I too will be bringing with me the page that shows K-1's can apply for SSN for the purpose of registering the marriage license. I hope I don't have too many problems, however it just seems like Tim knows everyone in that town, and I'm sure he's told me he knows the probate judge we have to register with. ( or something like that...this is so new to me). I'm sure I'll be alright, just hope it comes in time!

I don't know that many of us were in the system when we went to get our SSN. Most of the time they have to manually check your immigration stuff. Happened to me, and many others. I received my SSN in the mail about a week after visiting the office.

Glad to hear you got it and not a long wait!

We went this morning and we were in & out in about 10-15 minutes! He received the letter with the info about when he should get his card, if he doesn't get it, etc. Yea!

Wow! I'm still sitting on my butt and haven't gone... but this week! Sometime this week!

I am testing the system, wait time theory... I should definitely be in the system by now!

A couple questions for you guys who just applied for the SSN...

Question 3.. Are we "legal alien allowed to work" or "legal alien not allowed to work"? Because I'm reading here that if you select option 2, you need to show a document from the government enplaning why you need an SSN? Do we even have that available to us?

I'm sure this has been answered 100 times but I must have missed it

You check that you are allowed to work. The SSN card will say something on it about work authorized only with DHS permission or whatever.

Like Jill said, it's work authorized with DHS approval. (ie. you are not going to be able to get employed with using the SSN until you have something from DHS that says you are cool to work)
