Aside from the fact that hard labour is basically a way of getting around the emancipation provisions in the constitution?

Probably because in the few States that did use chain gangs the inmates were pimped out to private businesses via backhanders to corrupt prison staff.

Immigrants have forever been 'about to destroy America.' This is not new, it is an old theme, and the results continue to discredit those who espouse them. Much as there has been, throughout history, the ongoing theme of 'the next generation will destroy us.' Also with the results being the opposite.

I am no fan of illegal immigration, but in the long run, America will be fine. I for one choose to ignore the current 'brown scare' tactics.

Our mass Immigration is wrong on many fronts, this importing of low-no skilled workers ensures the continued drain on America and the working class......and the, Importing of Educated persons from many third world countries has left a devastating hole there, the very people they need to help lift their country up.. are bailing out and coming here, ensuring the poverty and deplorable conditions back home.

I was pointing out that throughout American history there have been such assertions made about each large new group of immigrants. This was true for the Irish, the Germans, Russians, Chinese, Vietnamese, so on and so on to the current Hispanic groups.

But even if we assume [and I don't] your made up fun fact was a fact, then how has America been ruined? How is America unrecognizable from the America of the 1960's due to immigration?

The only response you will give is to parrot just a shooter's made up fun facts. Or arguments which may be somewhat less obviously racist than our great great grandparents time, where the Irish were depicted as monkey's and Negroes were plainly considered ignorant, but none the less parralel the earlier arguments against the immigration of the aformentioned incoming immigrant groups.

The historical reality is something you can and should research. Throughout American history, each successive waive of immigrant groups has been subject to the same dire claims you now make about Hispanic immigrants legal or otherwise. History has shown such claims as:

Read your history, you will see this claim made again and again about the Irish, the Germans, Russians, Chinese, Vietnamese etc. Then wake up, smell the coffee, and realize over time even the most isolated immigrants have tended to not only assimilate, but also turned into positive assets for this country in terms of creativity, diversity, creation of wealth, the list goes on and on regarding immigrant success and thier contributions to the fabric of our society.

There is no magic number, over which we fall, under which we won't have enough immigrants.

Going back to your chart, if there are over 300,000,000 people in the USA and we are allowing just under 1 million immigrants a year, that is a 1 to 300 ratio. Whereas in 1900 to 1915 the population was around 76,000,000 and we were taking in nearly a million immigrants a year a 1 to 76 ratio, a far larger proportionately yet we survived... Of course good folks such as yourself also predicted doom back then...

No disappointment since your premise is in error. We have no idea how many illegals are here, but 10 million is prbably a very low estimate. Besides, our problems with illegals have existed far longer than the current deficit. The coddling, and taking of taxpayer dollars as been going on for decades. The damage to society has been incremental and cumulative.

For fun lets start our history lesson in 1882 with the Yellow Scare, and Congress passing the Chinese Immigration Act. Remember for fun that it was not until 1952 that Congress finally got it's last law off the books regarding allowing Asian's to become US Citizens...

Prior to that, persons who's sentiments expressed were not unlike yours, were against not brown people, but... gasp, the Irish! The 1840's and 50's were awash with anti-Irish sentiments. So much so a political party called the Republicans... errrr... the Know Nothings came into being and power.

It's not the 1880s anymore, it's 2009 and we have tremendous budget shortfalls, growing unemployment, huge trade deficits, a declining standard of living, and burgeoning debt. Because there is a line between a direct personal insult and just blathering on at the mouth. (And, no, that is not a veiled attempt to insinuate that some are just blathering. Though, clearly, some do. It is just my way of providing a definition.)
