Just thought I'd pipe in because I spent alot of time researching this (even though in the end this situation never applied to us as my wife held on to her UK employment).

So once upon a time DHS decided that the K1 visa needed to work authorized so that visa holders could get ssn after entry. However, they never intended the visa holders to actually be able to work. All of there guides etc. were very gray until the new ones were release (see the sticky by rebeccajo). It also didn't help that the social security had conflicting rules with DHS. But now they have made the I 9 rules very clear requiring the EAD.

There are other ways you can work but without the I9 it precludes you from being an employee. One idea is try to apply for an EIN. Form SS4 doesn't ask about EADs, though the IRS may cross reference DHS (I doubt it) and deny it, but its worth a try if you are desperate.

The easiest, fastest and most reliable method doesn't involve hoop-jumping or looking for loop holes. It involves being prepared for the period of time after entry to the US where one will not be authorized to work. This waiting period is somewhere in the neighborhood of 8+ weeks - if the marriage takes place right away and AOS (and EAD) are filed early on.

Btw, can he retain work from his employer in Greece?

Wow I just read this thread again.

Currently he's doing his military service for Greece (1 year) and has just finished his two university degrees and hasn't had a job based on them yet. He won't be finding a job until coming to the states as once the year is up, he's jetting over here for our wedding and our lives to finally start together!

02/10/2009 ----------Beginning of Greek Military Obligations for 11 months

01/10/2010-----------Gets OUT of the Army!

He didn't just want me long, he wanted me a little longer than forever... :3

Right which is why your first and best option is checking in with your employer in your home country to check for remote opportunities.

Foreign companies/employers doing business in the US must comply with US law (i.e., taxing, employment, compliance issues, etc.). With few exceptions.
