Hey Everyone!

Just thought I'd post my random topic here....see what others have done!

My passport is in my maiden name, therefore my green card is in my maiden name as well. I want to go by my married name, but obviously behind-the-scenes, legally I will be known as my maiden name.

I'm now applying for jobs, I'm thinking should I hyphenate my name, just put my married name on my resume, or my maiden name?

Just wondering what others did! After 2 years I'll be changing my passport into my married name, but for now it's fine the way it is.

Thanks everyone!

For employment, I would use the name on your legal documents. You can ask your co-workers to call you whatever you wish. My hubby used his nickname on resumes (but in his cover letter he would state his full legal name and request to be called by his nickname.) It just seems a little odd (less common really) to say this is my last name, but use this other last name. Whatever you decide make sure your work related documents (paycheck, retirement, insurance, etc) reflect your legal name.

Employment is an official thing, your employee will provide you with W-2, your employee will issue cheques in your name which you will have to submit in your bank account.......or a direct deposit from the employee. What I mean to say is, you will have to use your legal name which is on your passport and your GC. If you do want to change your maiden name to married name, you will have to make changes to those too. But whenever there is a legal matter you will have to use whats your passport says, even for things like buying plane tickets you will have to buy it in the name which is on your passport.

So during my interview in Montreal, they lady tells me that my green card/PR card will be in my maiden name, because my passport still is in my maiden name. That's why I was asking about the resume name & the name you'd go by. So we had it all figured out, I'd just go by my maiden name who cares.

Guess what shows up in the mail yesterday? PR card! And guess what name is on it? My married name!!!!

If my SS card is in my maiden name...then it'll really be all messed up. Anyone else ever had this happen? :P

Wow! That's wierd Moosker! Let's hope they are at least the same. If they are all different than you might have to contact them to sort it out. Maybe a hyphanated name thing is good to cover all the bases! At least that way it's all connected! I do agree with the others who said that for work/taxes etc you have to go by what is legally on your ID/Green Card though...

Changing your name on your SS card is much easier to change than your green card (and free!) so not a big deal if you've got to change it. Just a quick visit to the office with your marriage certificate and green card and you should have it in the mail in a few days.
