Try craigslist.

Or maybe apartments.com

I used to live in the south bay, in Sunnyvale. To my recollection, Fremont is a much more desirable city than Hayward. Given that Union City is in between both, I would guess you'd want to be towards the south end of Union City towards Fremont. Perhaps include Fremont itself in your search criteria?

be very careful with the alvarado niles area, it can be a bit less desireable than other parts of union city, there is a heavy concentration of bikers in that area who frequent bars and cause trouble see the local news. the better part of alvarado niles is the southern end nearer to fremont it's more of a bedroom community but fairly far from any public transport if that's important to you at all. craigslist.org is a great place to start.

As I recall, San Lorenzo is also a small oasis as a very nice town in the middle of otherwise not-quite-as-desirable cities in the East Bay. Stretching down from Richmond, Berkeley, Oakland, San Leandro to Hayward there tends to be a certain stigma, especially to neighborhoods down towards the bay. As you go up into the hills of course it all gets much pricier and more desirable. The one exception I was aware of was San Lorenzo which seemed to hold on to a garden like community. Not sure if that was ever really the case, or if it still is.

My views were shaped by talking to some Realtors about East bay towns around 1997-1998, when I was thinking of living in the East bay and commuting over the San Mateo bridge to the Peninsula. In the end we wound up living in the south bay, so I never actually lived in the east bay at all.

definitely the "hills" side of the east bay a.k.a above the 580 freeway are more desirable parts of the county to live on and definitely pricier but loads of gentrification going on throught alameda county. right now the south bay is "giving" away property to buyers due to the high foreclosure rate but remains a highly desirable area to live in with good schools etc.

nothing beats s.f. proper though! ;)
