My mother was originally going to be my co-sponsor because she is a teacher and has had a steady income/job for several years, but her recent W-2 has gone missing and I don't trust her to actually get everything done for me on time haha.

Now my dad I know will get everything done asap, but he changed jobs last year and his income is not a steady pay over several years due to the economy recently. My fiance said that he read somewhere on the forum that the co-sponsor has to have a steady or increasing income over several years to prove that they can support the immigrant. I've never heard anything like that before on the forum and I'm wondering if anyone can confirm this. It's getting close to our day and I'm really needing some answers soon

Tell your mother to call the IRS and ask for transcripts of her tax returns for the past three years, or however many years the consulate wants in your fiance's country. It costs nothing to order the transcripts, and your mother will get them in about 10 days. If she's got a fax machine, they'll even fax them the same day. Most consulates actually prefer the transcripts because they show the actual numbers the IRS recorded, whereas anybody can download a 1040 form and write any numbers in it they like (which is why they require the W2's and 1099's etc., as well). The transcripts also tend to be about 1/4 as many pages as the original tax return, since they just list the lines and figures from the original forms.

Edit: Forgot to mention that if you get the transcripts then you don't need the W2's.

There is all sorts of bad information out there, sounds like your fiance rad some of it. There is no requirement for "steady or advacning income"

There is a requirement to satisfy the consulate that the immigrant will not be a "public charge' If his father currently makes more than the guidelines and has a history of employment deomonstrated by last years tax return (the amount he made last yeart is not important) then you will be approved in all likelihood.

Thanks! The fact I wouldn't need the W2's if I turned in transcripts is a HUGE help! I didn't know that before :P Looks like I'll just get the last few years transcripts then.

Okay, I just got my tax transcripts and I know I'm a paranoid freak, but better safe than sorry, right?

I noticed that on my dad's tax transcripts that because he and my mom are married, it's the joint filing and has all the joint information rather than just his...

I thought that it had to be one individual filing, right? I do have this past pay stubs and his turbo tax information if that helps. Does he need to call the IRS and get his individual information?

No - that is ok to use.

He probably filed "jointly" so no issues.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.
