Hi everyone,

I have a few questions as I'm sitting here looking to complete the forms required for the interview stage of my K1 journey... I *think* I know most of the answers, but would really like some peace-of-mind confirmation.

I have three questions about the DS-230 form...

Question 32: "List below all employment for the last ten years." Would I be correct that they're *only* looking for employment here, and not the periods of unemployment? I've been unemployed for over a year now, and my previous job lasted 14 years, so this is shaping up to be a one line entry... lol

Question 33: "List below all educational institutions attended." They only give four lines, but if you go back to elementary school, I've attended at least 7 schools. Is this a case of "if there's not enough room, attach a separate sheet with the info"? Also, while I was in high school, I was a part of a honours program that allowed me to take college courses while still in high school. I think it was only two courses total, but should I include this in the list?

Question 35: "List dates of all previous visits to or residence in the US." I think I've read here before that writing something like "numerous visits" is acceptable for Canadians. I hope so, because I have a bunch of day visits, trips to conventions, trips to visit friends, and of course, trips to visit my fiancee to include. I doubt I can find out the actual dates or durations of any of those visits with the exceptions of the most recent (my visits to my fiancee). Is it worth writing in those visits specifically, and then adding "and numerous visits predating these"?

I also have two questions about the DS-156 form:

Question 29: "Have you ever been in the US (When, How Long?)." I assume this is similar to question 35 above, but they only give a small space to write the answer. Given the space, I'm assuming "Numerous visits / varied lengths" works just fine here.

Question 32: "Do you intend to work in the US (if yes, give the name and address of the us employer)." Well, I do *intend* to work in the US once my EAD is approved, but who knows where and for whom? Is checking "yes" and writing in "upon EAD approval" the right answer here?

Thanks so much for any help you can offer. I swear, sometimes even the simplest question on these forms can seem like a big hurdle. I'm just paranoid about doing something wrong! lol

We didn't list periods of unemployment - however since that is current for you - why not go ahead and enter it - otherwise they might think you just overlooked it.

Question 33: "List below all educational institutions attended." They only give four lines, but if you go back to elementary school, I've attended at least 7 schools. We listed from elementary school - I have seen people say they only listed high school and university - I think either is correct. I would list the institution where you took the two courses while still in high school though.

Question 35: "List dates of all previous visits to or residence in the US." I think I've read here before that writing something like "numerous visits" is acceptable for Canadians. Yes it is worth it, list all the ones that you can remember.

I'm not familiar with the other form :)

Question 29: Same answer for Question 35 on the DS-230, list the most recent visits or the ones that you can remember. I listed all the way back to 2002, because I was student for a number of years, of course not each individual weekend trip to and from for 6 years, but you get the idea. F-1 02-08...then my visits as a visitor.

Question 32: I think i put something like with EAD approval, or DHS approval, so yes what you have is fine!

I think you are technically supposed to write periods of unemployment, just so there is no confusion, but I didn't. I've only had one job so I just wrote in my one job! Whatever you are comfortable with.

I was lazy and just put the last 4 schools I attended. It never came up as an issue! Again, if you feel comfortable doing it then do it, but if you're concerned it will cause a problem attach an extra sheet and write them all out.

For this, I went through and listed all the trips I could remember. The list was very long and I know I forgot things and left things out. You aren't required to do this, but for me if was very helpful come interview time. The officer interviewing us said that I made her job very easy and thanked me for taking the time to make the list. I also added a little note at the end saying I live in a border town and have crossed since childhood and listed all the trips I can remember taking across but there were likely omissions. I think its smart, but again, its definitely not a must.

I also have two questions about the DS-156 form:

Question 29: "Have you ever been in the US (When, How Long?)." I assume this is similar to question 35 above, but they only give a small space to write the answer. Given the space, I'm assuming "Numerous visits / varied lengths" works just fine here.

I just listed all the trips that fit into the box. I thought it was a little redundant to list them here and then again on the DS 230. You could write "see attached" and then attach the same list you prepared for the previous form, that might be smart.

Question 32: "Do you intend to work in the US (if yes, give the name and address of the us employer)." Well, I do *intend* to work in the US once my EAD is approved, but who knows where and for whom? Is checking "yes" and writing in "upon EAD approval" the right answer here?

I said "yes" then I wrote "with USCIS authorization" or something along those lines.

After you receive your NOA2, your case has to be transferred to the NVC, who then sends it to your consulate (either Vancouver or Montreal). This could take anywhere from a few days to a few months if you're really unlucky! After the consulate receives and logs your case, they will sent you a packet 3 which gives you information on what documents you need to gather for the interview. Included in this are instructions to arrange your own medical, which has to be in Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. You get to chose the date! The interview is a different story. Be prepared to wait a couple months for that.

I and many others visited the USA while the application was pending. Just be prepared with evidence of ties to Canada (aka, reasons why you would return home). Some examples of strong ties would be, return plane tickets, a letter from your employer stating an expected return date, an enrollment statement from a school, a lease, mortgage etc. You may also want to bring evidence of filling the visa petition, which serves as prof of your intent to enter the US on legal terms on a later date.

Looks like you've gotten some correct information from previous posters, so I'm not going to repeat anything. I did want to mention when you made comment about the number of schools etc. that when filling out forms I never included elementary school. I'm 51, so having to put down anything other than HS and University I thought was a little much, so I never bothered.
