I don't know about anyone else, but there is a distinct lack of front door closets in the US. I asked about that when we were house-hunting, and one realtor said "What for?":lol:

Really! Wow, that is definately weird. Even if you didn't take your shoes off, what about if you have a rain jacket, or sweater or whatever that you use when you go out.

The house we live in does have a front closet - I don't even know what we would do with our shoes if it didn't - enter through the laundry room?

It has never been in an issue wearing shoes in the house.

It just seems very common place here in the states. Why take off your shoes to have to turn around and put them on again?

However, since I have gotten older and 3 kids runnin in and out I have gotten more aware of the dirt that gets tracked in doors especially when you have carpets.

I know in India it was FORBIDDEN to go into the home with shoes on. Their floors were impeccably clean.

I know in my husband's country they encourage wearing some kind of shoes or slippers indoors because the floors are indeed dirty.

I suppose if you are someone that has foot odor, being asked to take off your shoes may be a little comprising

Haha, I love this thread already, my husband and I debate this all the time. At first, I thought it was just a southern thing to keep your shoes on in someone else's house, but it seems like it happens everywhere! I remember when we first moved to CA, my hubby and I visited our friends next door for the first time, and as soon as we walked in the door, I kicked off my sandals, but low and behold..my husband tromps into their living room with this dirty basketball sneakers on  Later on when we left, I brought up the shoe debate with him, and he was adamant that it's normal here in CA too, even though we're both new here and don't know for sure.

From what I've noticed though, it does seem to be the norm. I can't figure it out...it just seems rude and inconsiderate to me to walk around on someone's clean carpet with your shoes on.

I can see why some people take their shoes off for the cleanliness reason, but for me, I just think wearing shoes in the house is just too damn uncomfortable. Wife rarely takes hers off, so I have to be careful around here, because I have had her step on my feet by accident before and shoes on socks doesn't feel too good...

Haha. Well, if you extend that analogy, why get out of the car if you're only going to get in it again? Why take your clothes off if you're only going to put them on again? Stuff like that. LOL

Why make the bed if you are only going to sleep in it again the next day?

Because it's the RIGHT thing to do.

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

My husband & I both grew up in a culture that forbade shoes in the house. So naturally, our apt is the same way.

Now that I'm older, it makes sense to take one's shoes off when entering the home.

Oh I love my first poll!

At my house in Vancouver we all remove our shoes! I have nice shoe racks in the alcove in the hallway and that is where shoes are places. Wet shoes as in the winter months go on a mat to dry and then go on the shelf. Each family member has/had a shelf for their shoes. When season changed shoes on racks changed. It all seemed so logical to me. When my b/f now husband came to visit he took off his shoes at the door and placed them on my rack. However, when I reached California no one took their shoes off! One day my young adult stepson came home with his entourage and I had just finished washing all the floors (an every other day event) and asked them to take their shoes off and not to walk on the wet floors - OMG you would have thought I asked them to cut off their right arms, they did comply though. After much discussion with Carnell, I have come to the conclusion that no one is going to take their shoes off until it is time to go to bed. Now having said that I managed to introduce Carnell to the comforts of slippers, and I wear those sandal-like crocs in the house or else my feet get dirty from all the shoes walking around, and it is city grud also. We have no carpeting, but rather tile and laminant so it is easy enough to take care of. Plus if I can get a housecleaner once a week I might not even continue to go CRAZY over shoes in the house. :jest::help::crying:

that is a bit of a silly analogy :P

you need to get out of the car, can't get anything done sitting in the car :P... and with the clothes, you need to change them once in awhile ..lol

I leave my shoes on if I know I am going to go out again , why take them off and put them back on 15 minutes later when you have to leave again :P ..lol
