My dog just passed way last week, if we ever get another dog he would definitely be an outside dog.

(F):( I'm so sorry!

With us its not that they don't know how we feel its they dont care cause they think they are better then us type of attitude.

That's just rude and inconsiderate.

yeah! I hope you can work everything out. It's sad when some people just don't have enough respect. I'm not sure how I'll handle the "no shoe" rule later. At the beginning of course, I don't think I'll push it.

OMG! It is definitely an American thing, and drives me nuts! I find it so rude when people come over and wear their dirty, stinkin shoes in my home! Take them off, now! I have new carpet, and I don't need you tracking in pee and dirt in my home! Pee, you ask? YES, PEE! When you go to a public washroom, no doubt pee gets on the bottom of your shoes, so dirty! I specifically ask when people come over now for them to please remove their shoes, I don't mind asking anymore. Also, when I go to one's home I also take them off. I just can't stand it, ahhhh!! In Canada, no one wears shoes in the home. I am a germaphobe, so this one really bothers me

yes I agree with you. we got new carpet in our appartment and my wife said new rule, no shoes allowed on the carpet. so we have to take shoes off, and I thought it would be hard to get used to, but it second nature now, I dont think about it.

but when I worked at Comcast, if the owner asked us to removed our shoes, we were not allowed to removed them. it was policy, we just put some shoe covers on our boots. if they still insist on us removing them, then they would have to call in for a new appointment

I never ran into that situation, they were ok with me wearing shoe covers, it was mostly east indians that wanted it, but were fine with the shoe covers. :)

I appreciate when businesses use the shoe covers. When it comes time to sell our house, I am going to purchase a box of shoe covers and have a sign up asking them to please put them on if they do not want to remove their shoes. I did that when selling my home in Canada too..... had a sign asking them to remove their shoes. No one seemed to be bothered by it.

I was reminded of this thread yesterday!

I went to a graduation party with a bunch of my fiance's old high school friends and when I got in the door my first reaction was to remove my shoes. Then I remembered, "Don't Americans keep their shoes on?" so I looked over and noticed everyone kept their shoes on so I left mine on as well. You all saved me some cultural embarrassment :P Even though it still think its weird... and dirty.

I remember going to visit my husband for the first time, and he just walked in, with his shoes on. I stopped, and my mouth literally dropped. I had taken off my shoes, then he returned the same confused glance. Then when he came to Canada, he noticed shoes by the door and didn't move further than the foyer because he was unsure how to proceed. I HATE shoes in the house, they track dirt, mud, pee, and it's just so disgusting. :(

When I move to the US, I'm investing in a ''REMOVE YOUR SHOES PLEASE'' sign.

Thanks, for the kind words about my dog. We had 12 wonderful years together.

We've been lucky, no problems with family and friends to speak of. My dad just thinks its weird, he'll say something like. "Oh, I see you're still taking shoes off at the door." My reply? "Yes and thanks!" lol.

I have a question about the poll. What was the intent behind the second question? Is it asking if you let people wear shoes in your US home, or is it asking if people do wear shoes unless you tell them not to?

I just wanted to know if people do wear their shoes in the house in the usa, maybe it is just my new family that's all :)

Hi Everyone,

What an interesting poll about shoes in the house, indeed!

Hmmmm...my answers:

In Canada:

-I wore slippers in the house (it was a cultural thing, as some of my ex-family had some non-Canadian foreign overseas customs and roots)

-I took my shoes off and wore socks when I went out and visited other people's houses.

-Visitors took their shoes off when they visited us (or wore slippers that were provided in the house....rofl....)

In the USA:

-I go barefoot in the house. I hate slippers, socks, shoes or anything else on my feet at home.

-I usually take my shoes off and wear socks when we go out and visit other people's houses.

(unless they tell me to keep my shoes on, which has happened before, as they thought it was odd that I would remove my shoes when I entered their house in the first place, must be a USA thing...)

-My husband wears socks at home.

-My husband takes his shoes off and wears socks when we go out and visit other people's houses.

-Visitors take their shoes off when they visit us (they see our shoes by the door, so they do the same by taking their shoes off)

(my husband is the one that doesn't like the shoes in the house, while I'm the one that doesn't care as much either way if the shoes are on or off in the house...whatever is best, I suppose.....)

-Repair-related people usually wear plastic bootie things or just wear their work shoes (I don't care...just do the repair asap!)

Lol....Both in Canada and in the USA...We had/have a lot of snow (for 6 months+ of the year)....So tracking snow in the house is not such a good idea either, nor is wearing heavy boots indoors, when one doesn't have to....

Now it's your turn...Shoes/Boots off or on.....?????

i wear slippers indoors, but really just love to go barefoot. My fiance always wears his shoes in his (soon to be our) house in the US and since we started dating and renovating the house, he has changed his ways and now wears slippers. His brother's family came over while i was visiting and my fiance asked them to take off their shoes as well...it is definitely a very American thing.

We take our shoes off, but I would never get all bent out of shape over someone keeping their shoes on as long as they aren't dirty (which I don't know anybody who WOULD wear dirty shoes in someone's house. whatever is most comfortable for the person and their feet lol.

What DOES drive me bonkers is the big pile up of stinky gross looking shoes at the door. PUT THEM IN THE DANG CLOSET!! Omg. I can't stand that. I can't tell you how many times I've tripped over shoes at my back door since hubby moved here (my daughter leaves hers there now too, grr), or at my in-law's house, especially when there's alot of company over. It's ridiculous.

3/5/11 sent LOC paperwork

3/9/11 date of NOA

I'm definitely pro-shoe cover. It's very considerate.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard
