Depending on how big or small he is and what the airline requirements are, chances are he'll go in the cargo hold and not in the main cabin. I suggest you check with the airline you are flying with and also read up on the CDC requirements here: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dq/animal/index.htm

If you follow everything correctly you shouldn't have to quarantine him upon arrival in the US

But first and foremost, talk with your family to see if they are willing to accept a pet into their home. You say your husband is allergic.. but is he actually allergic to Toby? Some people are allergic to certain breeds but not to others. Also, your FIL doesn't want a pet so I assume you are moving into live with them. Speak to them about it because it is their home. Does their home have a yard and is there space for him? If these things don't add up then yes, the best option would be to rehome him before you leave. It is a tough decision to make but remember you are doing what's best for him

I love dogs and have 3 of them myself, but I'd check your dog into the cargo hold. Before they will allow your dog to fly, it can't be above a certain temperature so since it is hot in the RP, you'll likely have to take a flight that leaves at night when the temps are lower and arrive in the USA in the evening in a cool place (temperature wise... cool) ..... San Francisco is that place. It is that place, because there is a PAL flight which leaves at 10PM and arrives in SFO at around 6:30PM. It is nearly ALWAYS chilly at SFO. You can get your dog at SFO, maybe your husband can meet you there, and then regroup for your next destination.

Of course, SFO is a good option if you are flying in the summer when temps are very high in most states. But, no matter summer or winter, I suggest a non-stop direct flight to the US mainland, clear POE, get your dog, and then head out from there to your final destination.

My friend had 2 dogs sent to the USA from Brazil, no problems, no quarantine. She was at the airport when they arrived (2 separate occasions) and as long as the dogs had the shots and proper paperwork, no problems, no quarantine.

When moving to Denmark I brought my dog, and again when I returned to the US last month. Most airlines do not allow pets in the cabin for international flights. It is very expensive to fly them cargo. It cost me as much one way for my dog as it did for me round trip. The biggest thing to know is that they must have their rabies shot at least 30 days before flight. If you the rabies shot is less than 30 days, they won't let the pet travel. Also, you need a health certificate, and it (the health certificate) cannot be older than 7 days.

My dog is part of my family, so it was worth the cost of bringing him. If you do the right steps, rabies and health certificate, your animal will not be quarantined.

I too brought a pet overseas. Our kitten Mini was about three months old at the time and they barely checked her. I think they are more uptight about animals from countries with a high rate of rabies. I had her certificate of health and vaccination records but they did not even look at them at our POE. They were so busy admiring how cute she was they barely scanned my bags. Everyone has a different experience but I am glad I did it. It was 150.00 for her to fly as a carry-on with me but the Vet bills were reasonable. Good Luck...I hope Toby can come.

I was wondering the exact same thing. We have a 2-month old Yorkie. We're doing all the vaccinations and health checks soon. But the only thing is were worried about the quarantine rules. She is too young to have the rabies vaccine so she will have to be quarantined. So can she be kept in our city or does she have to stay in the POE? From Korea to the US she is small enough to be kept under the seat. I just read about the hot weather thing so another thing to worry about.

i saw in northwest airline policy, 8 weeks old below are not allowed....

Well she will be older that that by time they come here. About 3 months old. So hopefully everything will go smoothly...

Oh~I hope you bring Toby.....but the whole allergy thing.....

yeah that allergy thing is also the reason.. but my husband told me that we will buy a small dog that never grows haha..

I currently am the proud owner of a 7 month old German Shephard/Alaskan Malamute X puppy. She's the sweetest and like everyone here, I fear that I may not be able to bring my dog with me across the border. I know she'll have a nice home with my mother and brother, but it still feels like I will be leaving my child behind. !

you can get dogs that are hypoalergenic, theres quite a few of them around breed wise too. they have hair instead of fur so he wont be alergic to it

I am a Vet,You cannot just bring your pet Over...............I am telling you theres still alot of requirements required.............

I've done people's papers request it takes month or so............

it is also depends with your dogs conditions...........alot of things to consider..............

I just heard, since my dog is from Canada...as long as it's healthy and up to date with it's vaccinations, then I am good to go.
