Rental Agreement Issue.

I am not sure if this is the appropriate forum for my question but since I am adjusting from B-2, I had to ask here. My situation is that before i came to the US and got married, my wife was living with her parents in this house for the last 7 years. Since the landlord is from our home country and knew my inlaws well they never bothered with a rental lease. Then when I got married, my in-laws moved to another house and I took over. Again, no lease and the situation just continued. We do have joint utilities in our names registered to this house though. Now, I am about to appear for my interview and seems like joint rental leases are given a heavy weight. What should I do? Would a letter from the landlord be enough? Or a lease is required? Also would somebody happen to have a sample lease, that I can amend accordingly and have my landlord sign it.

Hope somebody can help.

You could ask your landlord to sign/create an affidavit (examples in the Example Forms section) attesting to the fact that you two live in his/her home (being sure to give the duration of this living situation and the address).

As far as leases go - any office supply store (Office Max, Office Depot, Staples etc) have generic lease agreements - you may also obtain one from a local Realtor.

Thank you Otto und Karin! One more thing. Does the affidavit have to be on some specific paper or a plain paper will do. I am not familiar with legal paperwork here. Forgive my ignorance. Also, should the rent be mentioned in the affidavit?

Plain white 8.5 by 11.0 paper (copy/print etc) is just fine.

The rental amount being mentioned would be OK - but it's not likely that important - if it were me, I'd have it in there somewhere just because it's easy to do and if they don't care, they can just ignore it.
