I went to the social security office to update my status after my Oath ceremony and they told me to come back in two weeks because it’s not showing in their system yet. My question is, if in two weeks it will show in their system that I am a citizen why do I have to go back and tell them to update my status? Just to make me waste my PTO from work?

I am so happy to be done with the immigration that I don’t even want to complain tho

In my opinion, if you take your naturalization certificate with you, they should update your status in the computer instead of waiting for TWO WEEKS for the computer to update itself. I hate it when human beings in government offices act as if they are serving the computer instead of the computer serving them. And is it only my experience that this happens only in government offices?

Whenever anybody gives me such a reply in an office, I raise hell. And not just now, but from the day 1 of when I entered the U.S coz I hate incompetence and feel that I'd be only encouraging it if I accept it.

I actually had the Naturalization certificate with me!! The lady said that if she updates the status manually they will have to verify it with the immigration and that could take 2 months. go figure!

If it was done manually, you wouldn't have to go there again. That it takes 2 weeks or two months for verification later would not make any difference either to you or to the SSA office.

Yup, welcome to the lazy culture of America. Now we get to use computers as the scapegoat for everything. Computers were programmed to assist. I hate when I call something like AT&T and ask to change something and I have to "wait for the computer" or "we would do it but the computer won't let us". Anything you want to do you can, how easily the computer allows you is the question. If its programmed to do so, its easy, if its not, it can be done, one way or another anything can be changed. I get so aggravated with "We would but the computer won't let us.

Since when have our computer overlords taken over?

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering the same thing too....Would there be a delay in updating the SSA about one's citizenship status after becoming a US Citizen after the oath ceremony, despite having the oath certificate on hand already?

Lol...A similar thing happened to me too, when I got my 2yr green card (and had the temporary I-551 stamp in my passport right after the interview, and then got my card a week later)....

Despite that, there was a 8 week delay to verify my immigration status and to finally get my SSN card....

On top of that, they didn't tell me what the reason behind the delay was, and it was not until I bugged them about it, drove about 20 miles to the nearest SSA office in the middle of a snowstorm, that they told me what the real reason was.....

Hope this doesn't happen to any of you when you get citizenship and have to update them about it...And hope that you all get your new citizenship status updated in time....

Lol...if it isn't one government agency...it's another with delays....blah...

By the way, should one update the SSA first about the new citizenship status, or go to other government agencies/services first (dmv/driver's license, passport, voting, etc.) for the update? What happens when a person updates their new citizenship status with the SSA? Do they have to fill out new forms? Besides the citizenship certificate, do they have to show other documents? Do they get a new card? Or do they keep the old card and just update it with "citizen" in the system?

They will simply have to update their systems, you dont need to get a new card.

Yup, welcome to the lazy culture of America.

Our culture is not lazy!!!!...(neither are Americans).....and if our culture was lazy we wouldn't be a nation that is progressive compared to the rest of the world. You'll find the same type of people all over the world, who won't take the time to work a little harder or use their common sense to get things figured out. Please refrain from putting the US down!!

Except in Japan, they take their time to work harder and perform better. Easily the hardest working country. Hey by all means have your own opinion, but in my experience, everyone has an excuse to pass the buck. "Let me transfer you to xxx, I can't change that, if I could I would" has become standard pretty much. When do you call customer service somewhere and get helped by the first person anymore? lol

Sounds like you encountered an idiot at SS like I did, just a simple change on line 3 unchecking the alien allowed to work box to the US citizen box with proof of your certificate, the date at the bottom, the signature of the application and should be done with. This guy was giving me a hard time with a bunch of BS, but before I had the opportunity to pound the living ####### out of him, his supervisor came over and corrected him. Damned, I would have love to pound the living ####### out of people like that thinking they are God almighty.

But I couldn't help but tell him, I am giving him the opportunity to take 15.3% of my wife's paycheck that she also has to pay income taxes on that she may never get back even a fraction of it the way SS is going. Sure isn't like we are going there to get money, but giving it instead. My 3rd visit there with my wife, first was the EAD card with a probationary card, that was removed with her green card, with her certificate could get disability benefits on top of her measely SS benefit check is something terrible happens.

Another option is to completely avoid idiots at the SS office and simply mail your application in, but with the original certificate. But the problem with doing that, you may never see your certificate again.

It's not only me talking about dealing with government employee idiots, hearing the same argument with politicians if they take over health care. But I do know to carefully check my calendar before driving over, could be ground hog day or something like that, and when you drive over, find the place is closed.

Hi Everyone,

Here are my replies to your replies:

PaolaLew-Good to know that I don't have to get a new card, as I don't need a replacement now anyyways. Lol..though I'm wondering: Why do they print out SSN cards on flimsy pieces of paper, and it's supposed to be durable enough to last the rest of one's life. Lol...I've seen and heard stories of people whose cards have fallen apart and have worn out over the years...And yeah, getting replacements is not a good idea. So if the SSN ever makes new cards....Seriously...invest in some plastic cards and/or some way to make them durable to last a lifetime...

They will simply have to update their systems, you dont need to get a new card.

NickD-Oh yeah, I encountered yet another incompetent government worker....And likewise, I, my husband, and so many other I've known around here have encountered the same bunch of workers too. I've come to the consensus that all government workers, despite the government agency, are somewhat incompetent, "can't think out of the box", and get us all stuck in "bureaucratic red tape". Shrug my head....oh the mysteries of government work! Nevertheless, there are some exceptions to the rule, and yes, if one is lucky enough, they will find a government worker that is more than capable of doing their job in an effective and efficient way. Sorry to hear that you had a hard time when you went to the SSA. And yes, by all means, if you don't get good service, by all means, speak to a supervisor and/or manager to correct them. As for updating the SSA...I think it's better to do it in person (and make sure the office is opened and not busy that day too)....as gosh knows what can happen in the mail with lost documents...(especially originals that are hard and expensive to replace, such as a citizenship certificate). I even hesistate to send in the mail the original citizenship certificate for the passport application, but alas, I have no choice if I have to apply for a US passport later on. Oh well. As for healthcare in the USA...that's another story...anyone care to start another separate VJ topic about that? One can only wonder what the state of healthcare will be like later on down the road...
