Sorry for the hijack, lol, were a friendly bunch here, so things tend to get side tracked! 1 way or another, all threads end up being all about Tim Hortons! lol Welcome to VJ

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I imported my GMC truck to the US and still had money owing to GMAC financing. I still made payments through my Canadian bank account to GMAC. I registered with my state had to pay the state sales tax and a fee to get it titled. I never inquired to GMAC if I could do it - just did it - maybe shouldn't have but I figured I was still making payments so what the hell. Crappy thing is that I paid 3 taxes on that thing....PST, GST and ND Sales tax.... plus the registration and title fee. I ended up trading it off a year later in the US- paid of the financing remaining and bought a US vehicle. Dealerships don't seem to favour a trade on a Canadian vehicle as they say it's going to cost them so much money to get the odometer changed over.

Just wanted to add that my situation is probably a little different as I still worked in Canda and drove the vehicle to work everyday - so I figured if they really needed to repo it they could get it.

I just spoke with GMAC today and they told me that I can get the compliance letter, but advised me of course that payments come out of a Canadian account. I have a co-signer on mine that will not be moving to the U.S. so if anything it would fall back on my mother. They also told me that the letter was free! I hope its still free when I call back in September!

I was a bit worried about being able to get the letter as I have heard some car financing companies do not want the car going to the U.S. if the car was financed with a low interest rate...mine was 0%, but didn't seem to be an issue for GMAC. *knocks on wood*

I know how you feel about the sales tax, I had to temp import my car for 1 year in ND after I graduated college, but was working on OPT...get dinged for 3 taxes, plus fees was not fun!!

Minnew, you can always ask for the letter now, FYI! It won't change at all. I got mine in June and only imported my car in November of last year.

What if there is a recall on my car between now and September? Likelihood probably not...would they notify me?

If there is, the POE sure won't know about it  I never thought of that to be honest, it just stated that my car vin # met all the US requirements, so I knew that wasn't going to change over a matter of months

That total ticks me off, California is broke and NoDak has a somewhat Billion dollar surplus (I guess Letterman was even joking about that) and we still have state sales tax and I had to pay state income tax on my Canadian income (found out that the states don't have to comply with the tax treaties...only applies to federal tax, and that taxation of foreign income varies by state ;(
