Gabriel said that he was a legal resident with a visitor's visa when he got his license

How can you be a legal resident of the US with a visitors visa???

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

Immigration lawyers say that PennDOT's plan to yank licenses from drivers without a valid Social Security number is unfairly penalizing immigrants who got licenses in the past without a Social Security card.

"It's devastating to them," said Philadelphia immigration lawyer Jon Landau. "These people are working, and many have jobs, like cleaning houses, which require them to use their car."

hmmmm.

Easy with your hate rhetoric.

:innocent:

Aren't you allowed to drive with your foreign license for a certain perid of tm before you must have a PA one? IN MA, you are able to drive on a foreign license for one year. That shoud give most of the legal immigrants enough time to get a social. I think that the DMV is good place to start cracking down on illegals. Way too many driving with invalid or counterfit documents.

Check the laws for how long after moving into a State (become resident of the State) you have before needing a drivers license for the State. This little "gotcha" can create a problem as the immigrant has "moved" and become a resident of the State.

State laws vary and so does the mood of a LEO if you are needing to show proof of drivers license in the event of an unfortunate event.

Exactly. Many K3's fall foul of these laws. It's not amusing for those that do.

When I say fall foul, I mean that it restricts their movement, not that they willingly or unwillingly flout the law :)

The international DL will give some time before running out of time so to speak. This time period is a good opportunity for the immigrant to gain some experience on the roads. (It took Isa a little time to become accustomed to the larger faster cars, wide roads, stop signs (gotta stop  ), others rude behavior, etc. )

MA doesn't accept an international DL. They will accept a valid license from your home country. Counterfit international DL are easy to get. A passport and home country license are a little harder to forge.
