I liked the guy who played Superman - thought he filled the part really well. Just didn't think it was much of a "Return".

Kevin Spacey never ceases to irritate me.

Emphasis on the "filled" part. Rumor has it that he was so well endowed that he had to be digitally "Reduced" in his red speedo.....

Seriously, no I haven't seen it. But everyone I know who did said it was good, just don't go in with any preconceptions....

I saw it last weekend. Actually I expected something worse, I was very skeptical (is that well spelled?) about the actor 'cause I'd never heard of him and I'm the kind of freak who feels that the link Reeves-Superman is impossible to repeat. To my surprise, I noticed that the guy was PERFECTLY trained to emulate every single feature, grin, smile, looks of Christopher Reeves, even though he does not look like him. There was more than one scene digitally "retouchée" to the point that it looked more like a Madame Tusseaud's statue of Reeves. I liked it... and he has the MOST BEAUTIFUL eyebrows I've ever seen.

About Spacey. I LOVED HIM! I have always liked the strenghth of his characters. Before seeing the film, I thought it had been a good choice; who else could be at the same level of Hackman?. But as someone said before, the guy was much more Lex Luthor... he was so EVIL, so satanic... There came a moment when I actually told my husband I wanted to go home, just like a kid... isn't that Luthor's point?

Lois Lane....mmmmh... she's cute (the actress)... Lois, though, is supposed to be bolder. No more comments about her.

Special effects great! I don't dare to compare the ones of the first movies because it makes no sense. The effects by that time caused in us the same impressions these cause now. I just see it as "evolution" and I still love the oldies.

Inconsistencies in the plot? Plenty!! I agree with that... but what the heck... it's Superman!!!

we went tonight... i went knowing that i would hate it... that noone could replace christopher reeves

i felt that they did a great job... it kept the feel of the first movie (the same kind of wit and sly remarks)... even tho it was contemporary, there was much of the look and style of the comics (for example, lois' shoes) ... it was delivered very much like a comic book... and i do feel that much of this was leading to a sequel... but im ok with it... im eager to see how the whole story plays out... and its ok with me that this is a first part... i like that they didnt try to wrap up the whole thing in 2 1/2 hrs

i liked the casting as well... brandon routh really surprised me... so many times i had to look a second time to NOT see reeves, yet he didnt seem like he was just mimmicking...

hackman wasnt scary at all... spacey was... but then, not so evil as to be too scarey for kids to see the movie... the violence was checked for what it was

overall, i felt it was something that several generations could enjoy... and thats something that makes a movie a success

That's my problem with it. Its sort of explained in a roundabout half-hearted (dare I say it 'unsatisfactory') way, but not really in a way that provides much of a conflict or challenge for the character. Essentially it ends up being about how people around him have changed as a result of him 'buggering' off, aside from that the disappearance is meaningless - and it wouldn't have made much of a difference if Superman had decided to shut himself in an apartment and eat Cheetos for 5 years.

I notice they did the same thing with James Bond for Die Another Day - having him locked up in a Korean jail and the subsequent references to how the world changed (clearly a reference to 9/11 - as if to suggest that it would never have happened with JB on the job).

From a writer's perspective, when you use a device like this its usually to create a conflict between the characters past and his present. "Kryton Island" seemed to me to be an attempt to do this - and as it was his father's 'sea monkey crystals' that caused the problem to begin with, it seemed to me that there less pathos than the situation called for.

Okay, so today my wife and I watched Superman and Superman II with Christopher Reeves and I found another serious problem.

In the original Superman, his father tells him in the barn through crystalized recordings that he's been dead for 1000s of Earth years. So I have to take it for granted that the spaceship baby super travelled across the universe in took 1000s of years to get across the galaxy because it left right before Jar-El's death. Alright, I'll take Einstein's theory for granted that it was only a few years for Superman in his ship. BUT..

In Superman II, Lex Luthor watches an education piece about trees where Superman's mother is reading from an Earth book that is maybe 100 years old. How did she find out about the book if she was dead??

AND, in Superman Returns- he is "returning" from his 8 year round trip to the spot in the Universe where his planet was supposed to be at. How come in only takes him 4 earth years to get back this time when it took thousands of earth years the first time???:angry:

We saw it last week. It was ok. Not as entertaining as the first, but ok.

I thought Kevin Spacey was very good as Lex Luthor. But I have always enjoyed his characterizations.

No one has mentioned the allegorical references to Christianity. Jesus Christ, Superman ? (Stole that one from CNN....)

Oh, that's definitely there. I first noticed it months ago in the early trailers... the voice over of Jor El saying, "I am sending you, my son, my only son..." In the word of Douglas Adams in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, "This is getting needlessly messianic." ;)

I heard he has a son in this movie. True or not? I'm not going to watch it to find out.

Well, Lois Lane has a five year old son. In Superman II, Superman and Lois do the wild thing. Superman Returns occurs five years after Superman II....do the math.

Oh yes, what's up with that? Superman, a paradigm of virtue having an illegitimate son?

Otherwise, the movie was pretty kick-###. :P
