Senate Approves Slavery Apology

Well if you say slavery built America you may be correct, but its nothing to be proud of. Hell we took America from the Indians & I'm not proud of that either, but its history.

slavery was only economical after the invention of the cotton gin, and then only for a few decades until the development of the cotton picker. slaves were no good for taking tobacco leaf, as this task required evaluation of each leaf.

the entire idea of apologizing for slavery is rediculous. if i'd known it'd be this much trouble, i'd have picked that damned cotton myself.

You know what, I'd LOVE to see you try to do that...the heat here in the South is absolutely brutal. Right now, it's 105 outside with about 75% humidity. Considering I just drove through cotton, peach, and onion country in GA, I can honestly tell you that you'd probably die in that heat, just like so many slaves did. If you'd like to start picking cotton, I could set you up with a few farms about 70 miles away from my home...I'm sure they'd love to have the free help.

To read your post one would conclude you are not aware of the Billions and billions already spent in one way or another to address this very thing.

Some programs have bore fruit many (IMO) have not only made things worse.. but many times worse.

What specific action would you like to see Father Gov take to stem the problems in our Black communities?

I was reading an article today about a girl in Chicago who received an award. The thing that caught my attention is how she said that she fears for her life every day because of the violence that has plagued her community. This is what congress should be concentrating on. I cannot speak for AA communities but I would think if I was in their shoes, I would want the government to do everything they can to help the community and give them the opportunity to live a free and safe life.

I mean it's disgraceful to read that people living in AA communities are suffering war like PTS symptoms because of the constant exposure to violence, shootings, gang activity and sirens. How would anyone here like to live under those conditions 24/7?

On one hand you have congress and a system doing nothing about this sort of stuff. Then on the other you have criminal organizations such as as the ACLU who will stop at nothing to prevent police from proactively policing these areas. Who would rather than country burn down that have the community set up 24 hour surveillance. Yes, on every street corner (if need be) to catch these criminals that are terrorizing their community.

Downtown DC has a shooting pretty much every day now. I stopped watching the local news as I have had it up to my neck seeing that #######. Half the shootings occur within walking distance of the capital. These people need assistance not some freagin lame #### apology. Since we let this sort of stuff go on, they obviously assume we don't give a #######.

I think the apology also comes late, when the matter is way way beyond being dead. But I do think that, at least this senate has guts to be human enough to be apologetic which other senates in the being ignored. This apology was long due, but it's never too late. I do hope the lawmen doesn't make any mistakes for which the future generation has to apologize.

DC already has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country. (And murder is illegal there as well.)

If folks are ignoring the laws and continuing to kill each other anyway, are they really the sort who are going to be able to get their lives on track now because the government has officially apologized for something that happened to their (possible) relatives several generations ago? "OK. Well, now they're sorry for slavery. I guess I'll go get a job and start paying taxes, taking care of my kids, and stop killing all of my (possible) brothers."

I'm not a big Obama fan, but the one thing that's really nice about Obama is now nobody in this country can claim it's "the man" holding them down. Coupled with this apolgy, they're running out of excuses not to contribute to society and their communities.
