Most people around the world are over similar historical events. I have a South African friend and I have hardly heard him mention apartheid. Whereas, if I listen to the likes of Jesse Jackson, I would think that slavery just ended yesterday in America.

Why should I feel guilty and blackmailed by the past? because I am white, therefore, I should bow my head down in shame. Actually that is racist in itself. I am more concerned about the problems facing the AA community in 2009, rather than their great great great great grandparents subjection to slavery.

I don't know about the racist part (we certainly shouldn't condone what our white ancestors did) but we agree that the Senate has more pertinent issues to deal with.

What we did, has already happened and cannot be changed. What we do looking forward is what counts.

Take the present day south. Previously known for the epicenter for slavery, yet in my experience, blacks and whites commingle more in the South than they do in the North.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Okay, first I agreed with ALC the other day. Now...I have to say Booyah's got it right here. Historically, that is the case.

I don't know what an "apology" will do, but it doesn't hurt, that's for sure. After all, Pope John Paul II formally apologized on behalf of the Catholic church for its role(s) during WWII. It didn't help anything, didn't change the past, but it was a point of healing.

Lets apologize and be done with it then.

Rather than focusing on historical events that no one was even around to experience, the politicians should put their time and effort towards the poverty and disgraceful level of crime in AA communities.

Letting something go is also the first step of healing.

The Apology is fine by me (though silly) but don't kid yourself that we will ever be done with it, in fact, the thorn of slavery only grows more sharp with each generation.

This silliness will continue until the Hispanic population reaches the tipping point.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

The Senate apologized for slavery on Thursday, almost 150 years after the start of the Civil War.

The resolution, passed by voice vote, said it was important for Americans to apologize for slavery “so they can move forward and seek reconciliation, justice, and harmony for all people of the United States.” It was passed on the day before Juneteenth, which commemorates the emancipation of slaves in 1865.

PSSST. All the slaves are dead. Want live slaves? Go to a country that still has them.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Slavey was a symptom and a root. The apology is about way more then some have made light of it here. The discrimination, racism, and segregation went on for a long part of the US's history up until the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950's and 1960's so it's not just about something that happened 150 years ago. The symptoms still pervay to this day and evidence of that is that it wasn't until 2009 that the United States accepted the first half black half white presidential elect in it's history. To make a mockery of this historic apology is a disingenious insult to millions here in the US. Many here on VJ wouldn't be able to be with the ones they love if it wasn't for the history and those that fought so long for equal rights.

Seems we have a lot to apologize for then and slavery is just one thing. What should we apologize for next?

being white.

It's not historic. It's not a big story in the news. It's just a senate resolution with no implications.

Nobody is condoning slavery... pretty much everyone agrees that racism & discrimination still exist, but most would argue that today's society as a whole has improved in regards to these issues. With that being said I strongly disagree with apologizing for something I never did. We took America from the Indians & that was wrong as well; should I apologize for that too? The list could go on & on... what's more important than a token apology is an overall shift in society's mindset & although there is still room for improvement we have come a long way in 150 years.

Yeah the Indians weren't much on border security.

But they did go on the War-path from time to time... which is more than we can say concerning our reaction to the new flood of foreigners in our time.
