This is why the private insurance system does not work, insurance companies are in the business of making profit. Covering health care costs for their 'insured' cuts into their primary business, which is MAKING PROFIT.

Lawsuits for malpractice may also be a valid issue, and cause for excessive health care costs, but as the OP is focused, the real issue is that private insurance companies exist to make a profit, not assist in covering the costs of health care. By a certain age, all conditions are 'preexisting.' So the option to switch private insurers becomes less and less an option.

Private employer based insurance only works while you are working, get too sick to work, too damn bad...

Defending a system that clearly does not work is pathetic. Granted finding a workable alternative is a massive task.

This isn't surprising. I wonder how it fits in w/ eliminating preexisting condition exclusions.

It also found that policyholders with breast cancer, lymphoma and more than 1,000 other conditions were targeted for rescission and that employees were praised in performance reviews for terminating the policies of customers with expensive illnesses.

This is all about insurance execs saving money and putting profit before people.

Indeed. I'm wondering how insurance companies intend to handle the (possible) requirement that they can't deny coverage based on preexisting conditions. If they're required to cover anyone who applies, and there's a cap on the premiums they can charge...

Stop trolling this thread. If you want to join in on the discussion of this topic - insurance execs dropping customers, then by all means, add something to the discussion. But if you want to go on your own tangent, make your own thread. Or do you want a suspension?

Sorry but it is a very legitimate question when it comes to health care. Without a cap, universal coverage is finished. Attacking insurance companies while ignoring a meteoroid heading towards you (open slather litigation) is disingenuous.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Go start your own thread about pre-existing conditions, Ms Wild Tangent.

This thread is about health insurance execs dropping patients to save money. You're not even in the ballpark, woman.

no sh!t? i think thats why they're in business, to make a profit.

how about the medical industry quit gouging us & the insurance companies...aka 'put people before profit' while the gov't watches & accepts their campaign contributions... 'put people before profit'?

This thread is also about people, is it not? So lets talk about Brittany Spears' new love interest.

No it's about liberal propaganda, where you will beat off about health care but refuse to discuss any topic that contradicts liberal ideology (aka lawsuits).

It must be a coincidence then that not once have you mentioned the enormous costs litigation has on health care. As hasn't your bud Obama. Our colleges taught us to objectively analyze both sides of an argument. not doing so resulted in a fail. Obviously this is not the case here.

I have seen it time and time gain with libs here. You will beat on about a topic but the second it borders contradicting your ideology, you go all mum on the issue.

Biggest problems with health care are:

1. Litigation

2. Insurance companies

3. Pharmaceutical companies

You seem to ignore numero uno

With all due respect, where do you get your information regarding the "Biggest problems with health care"??

Here is a more rational, less Limbaugh examination of true costs of health care:

http://scienceblogs.com/denialism/2009/05/...f_excess_co.php

Litigation is a factor, but hardly the primary factor in excessive health care costs in the good old USA private insurer system. Your alleged 'numero uno' is a fun fact pulled out of your Right wing posterior...

Interesting link that, I think the only way to fix the current health system is to have a plan that is "non-profit" which runs alongside the current private system, take the power away from profit, business schemes and give it to the people of the USA.

There would still be a market for the private insurance companies, so I don't know why the Republicans are concerned about them.

That some here have no problem with health insurance companies dropping customers to save money is absurd. Those people represent a percentage of the uninsured or under insured in this country which is at the heart of why insurance reform is even a top issue in this country.

so why should the insurance company put people before profit, while the medical industry doesn't?

Mike, do you think your doctor treats you because he can make a profit off of you?

yes. why else would he charge for an office visit?

Absolutely! What a silly question. No-one's going to treat you for free.

The medical industry charges so much because their liability insurance is so high.

Oh wait, I think I'm agreeing with Constellation.

Steven, don't kick me out! :P
