Thanks for that info, but I actually wasn't working abroad. I was living off of money I had saved up prior (The US dollar goes far in Thailand even today, and went even further back when I was there).

You can and should file a tax return every year just to have a record. You can for example show 0 income and hence no tax and nothing to pay. This will give you the tax record you need as a minimum for some transactions like Immigration and Real Estate - why you didn't have any income etc. is a different factor in determining your eligibility; for example if you are sponsoring someone or if you are trying to buy property etc. Each has its own criteria and ways to satisfy their requirements e.g. co-sponsor; big down-payment etc.

Don't be lazy. File your taxes and be done with it.

on another note; many people wait years to file for AOS - its Ok as long as you don't get caught for something and need to prove your legal status, then and only then you have a problem. Personally you need to get a greencard to work, to drive, to travel out of the country etc. without filing for it; you are basically a goat sitting in the house. Good Luck
