Travelling within the US while filing for AOS

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question... but I guess it's to do with the Adjustment of Status.

I haven't filed yet.. I have just under 3 more weeks before my K1 Visa expires, so I'm working on it tonight so I don't become out of status. I have a convention to attend in Colorado in August.. my flight and hotel are all paid for, and we can't drive there.. but I'm wondering how it'll work at the airport when I don't have a green card yet and will be on the Adjustment of status phase. I've never taken a domestic US flight.. I've only been on trans-Atlantic flights, so I'm not sure what to expect at the airport and what documents I need to have with me.. because obviously, I'm terrified of them getting confused about my status and deporting me

and I'd much rather drop the convention/flight/hotel alltogether than risk being deported and losing my right to be here with my husband.

As long as you have filed for AOS (and especially if you filed before your I94 expires in 3 weeks), you have nothing to worry about when it comes to flying domestically in August. All you need is a government issued photo ID. If you can get a state driver or non-driver ID in your state, you can use that to fly. Of course you should have your passport and AOS NOA1 with you just in case.

Urge is correct. Just be sure that your ticketed name matches the name on your photo ID. When you check in at the airport, the airline personnel will take a perfunctory look at your photo ID (your passport will suffice, if that's all you have and if it matches your ticketed name). At Security, the personnel will check your ID and your boarding pass closely. Once you're past Security, and at the boarding gate, only your boarding pass will be needed.

Until my wife got her green card, I made certain that she kept these items with her:

1. Home country's passport

2. Official duplicate of our marriage certificate

3. Photocopy of our AOS cover-letter (with copy of payment); later replaced by

4. NOA1 for AOS

As long as you will have filed for AOS within the 90 days that your I-94 is still valid, you should be just fine. Be sure that the photocopy of item #3 has the date of AOS filing on it. If by your August trip you haven't yet received your NOA1 for the AOS, keep items #1, #2, & #3 above with you.

I always recommend erring on the side of caution and "documentation overkill." This goes quadruple for anyone who will be traveling by car within 100 miles of the Mexican border, which fortunately does not apply to you.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Not only government-issued IDs, state-issued IDs too.

The majority of the domestic passengers show their DL as pictured ID.
