A solid two-thirds of Americans want a public plan to compete with private health insurance, according to a poll released today by the respected Kaiser Family Foundation. The results bolster attempts by President Obama and most Democrats in Congress to include a public plan as part of health-care reform. South Florida Democrats are pushing hard for a public option, which they believe would help curb costs.

Many Republicans, including Tom Rooney of Tequesta, oppose any government-run plan for fear it would reduce the quality of care and limit choices for consumers. Opponents also fear a public plan would create unfair competition and drive private insurance out of business.

Some 61 percent in the poll said they believe health-care reform is more important than ever, given the country's economic problems. But less than half the public, 41 percent, say they are willing to pay more for health reform.

The survey was taken June 1 to 8 by researchers at the Kaiser Family Foundation of 1,205 adults nationwide.

The questions, results and charts can be viewed here.

I'm sure most Americans simply want the best plan they can get for the cheapest price... public or private doesn't matter to most people.

One: we have the most expensive system pretty much anywhere, so spending more is completely inappropriate. two: I don't care if its public or private as long as I can still get a job and get paid enough to have my loans paid off and make enough to make medical school hell worth it AND get quality of care without paying for bureaucratic #######.
