You know those people who when eating at a Mexican restaurant try to improve there Spanish by asking the waitress how do you say this how do you say.... I find it somewhat annoying.

Why do you hate people who want to learn?

Hate was your word, I said annoying. It just comes of as fake, like there trying to impress the waitress or something, it seems if they really wanted to learn spanish they would be taking classes or something.

It's a long running joke of an expression here. n00b.

Our baby granddaughter, 8 months old now, loves it when my wife signs time to go to sleep songs in Spanish, my kids love it too as they would like their daughter to be bilingual.

Schools are really pushing learning a second language here, both in high school and college. Step daughter elected to take Spanish, a straight A+ student for that class for her without doing any homework and for the most part, can correct her teachers. My gals are doing an extremely wonderful job of learning English, wife has a little accent, hope she never loses it, daughter is 100% American.

So far I speak 3 languages, I sure wanna pick up another two, I plan to go back to Japanese when I can, and I'd like to learn one more, either German or French.

I've lost most of my French and the less I use my Spanish the more I lose it. I taught Spanish for 7 years, and though I read it with no trouble, I have a harder time speaking these days. There's always the moment of panic when someone speaks directly to me in Spanish where my brain says "OMG FOREIGN LANGUAGE DANGER WILL ROBINSON!" My German is laughable but P tells me "one word at a time." I do want to be fluent in German though to speak to his grandma and to him even.

My son, who just graduated from high school speaks Spanish and German fluently and knows basic French. His intended college majors are archaeology and Near Eastern Studies, so he's already planned his next 5 years and the other 3 languages he wants to learn. I am impressed, but is it bad that your own kid makes you feel dumb? :)

Twice for the will robinson comment as well as the last bit. :P

I studied French for 3 years when I was young but lost it all pretty much, these days I recognize very few words and have a familiarity with the language in general (meaning I know how things sound, although I don't understand it).

I also studied Japanese for 2 years, but I was doing it all. In Brazil you either study to be able to speak and so you just learn romaji (words written with our alphabet) or you do it all and learn like a little kid learning how to write the alphabet (to learn all the kanji, hiragana, and katakana). So in my case I learned to write and read hiragana and katakana and some kanji, so 2 years is actually very little time so I only learned the very basic stuff, and since it's been a while I've already forgotten most of it.

We mix it up. Traditionally (I mean the first couple years) we used English because I didn't speak Portuguese and now we mix and match. Del is speaking Portuguese with me more and more to help me practice, but he also wants to speak in English so that he can use his English and not lose it before we go to the US. Last night we spoke almost completely in Portuguese.

As for what language we use in "bed", I use English, he uses Portuguese...but we both understand both, so it works. ;)

We mix it up. Depends on the mood really, we will say whatever language comes to mind first (Spanish or English for him, all 3 of them for me).
