Hello everyone. I need help with a question that may seem lame but I wanted to ask anyway. Next week I will be in Jamaica and I have a funeral to attend. I have a few questions:

1. What do I wear?

2. What happens at a Jamaican funeral?

3. Do they have a "repass" like we do in the states?

Anything else I should know? Please feel free to post.

Thanking you all in advance!

Blessings........

You wear what you would wear to a church service. Note woamn do not wear slacks to church in Jamaica.

The same thing that happens at funerals in the USA.

They have a 9 nite, it's' where they celebrate the night before the funeral service all night long.

1. Jamaican like to dress so wear a nice outfit (black, purple, white, off-white, grey)

2. They have a church service with the body in the church, after which they take the body in a hearse to the burial plot and another service is held where they "commit" the body in the ground.

3. I don't know what a repass is but we have one funeral and there is no second service later in the afternoon or at a later date. Who didn't make it to the funeral ends up missing the whole thing. The person who passed is taken to the burial site or if they are to be cremated it is done at a later date but there is no second "showing" of the body.

Depending on where the funeral takes place and if the family can afford it, then there may be something to eat afterwards; if it is in the rural area the family usually cook for the mourners. Prior to the funeral the family of the perosn who passed have what is known as "Nine Nights" we call it "Ni-nite" where friends stay until late in the night playing dominoes, drinking white rum and beer or other liquor and eating fried fish, curried goat or chicken. I guess it all depends on what they have to offer.

A repass is basically they serve food with family and friends. Okay I got it now. Thank you ever so much!

i'd wear a nice shade of purple

purple is sobre but not depressing

so if the arrangers specify they want cheerful colors you will fit in

and if its the converse (everyone wearing black) you will fit in same way

to be on the safe side i would also go conservative with the style, not necessarily puritan but not club wear

i would advise that u carry a pair of flat shoes with you that you don't mind getting dirty

because high heels ("stoosh shoes") and grave side won't work, especially if the deceased is being buried at dovecot or meadowrest

umm, otherwise i can't really think of anything else

edited: i see where u say u're wearing brown. you can't lose with that either

No Im wearing black and yes I remember that I need to wear flats. I usually wear flip flops. No the dress I packed is not club wear. I am a very respectful young lady. This is the first "public" event Im attending with my finace where his family will be there, so I will be very ladylike and respectful.

oh i didn't answer what happens

it depends on the denomination of the church the funeral is being held

some sermons tend to be long

catholic funerals are usually short

they normally have a viewing before the funeral starts

then they close the casket

you guys will probably get a program

you pray, do bible readings, sing

a eulogy is delivered

tributes

the pastor preaches

sometimes they open the casket again for those who came late

then you all go to the graveside in a long line of cars, usually escorted by the police

then at the graveside you sing more songs

the pastor delivers the last speech/rites

casket lowered

big bawling

and then you go back to a home/reception hall where food is served

Interesting. I've been to funerals where it is more a party then a funeral.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

TRUST ME!!!!

you need to see when some area leader or druggist dead

i'm talking about casket in a glass, horse drawn chariot

a procession of escalades

new years eve ball dressing

you would think you are at one of them british link up parties

very distasteful

i will never forget when i was a very young girl and this gun man natty morgan died

he was shot to death by the police

and of course they had a HUGE funeral

and the ppl had the nerve to bring a wreath shaped like an M16!!!!

and the pastor kept taking it off the casket and as the pastor took it off the ppl put it back on

funeral is big business in jamaica

and is the one thing that is recession proof

That sounds like serious business. I really appreciate the imput. Thats why I told my fiance that Im not going as a "tourist" this time. I want to learn all I can learn because in the future, I'd like to start a business in Jamaica, maybe even open a school since I am almost finished my degree here in the states to become a teacher. I would love to teach here during the school season here and in the summer time in Jamaica.

Roxie, who told you that. While it may be frowned on, I've seen many women wear slacks to church back home.

Bunz, don't get me started on funeral wear...some people just don't ave no damn sense

You said 'sundress'. Please don't wear anything sleeveless just in case. If it has spaghetti straps, wear a little cover up with it.
