Hi!

Ask lang po ako kasi yong wedding ko sa August 8 pa.

Pero we're planning to get my checking account para meron na akong bank account kasi I can't have check cash kung wala akong bank account. We're thinking na baka needed yong SSN sa pag-open ng account.

What would be better, kuha na akong SSN ngayon or after na lang ng kasal namin. Then, saka na lang din ako open ng bank account.

You don't need to have a SSN in order to open a bank account. They will ask for 2 types of ID primarily your passport and a secondary type of ID which can be a utility bill or us immigration visa. Hope this helps.

I filed my SSN before I got married because of these reasons:

1. on my marriage certi. they need my SSN

2. after getting married we applied joint bank account

3. to avoid any possible problems with I-94 expiration date

Anyways, after you get married, changing name is just easy.

good luck

Getting SSN prior to getting married cuts both ways. I did get mine before I got married. That is if you don't mind making another trip to the SSN office to have your name changed. But if you want to open a bank account, you don't need to show them (the bank) your SSN. Two valid IDs will do.

Opssss... sorry. I was carried away when I posted this thread. I had been unconscious that some foreign people can read it.

Anyway, I am just asking which is better to get my SSN before my wedding or after my wedding because we wanted to open joint bank account. :)

Thanks a lot!

for me i went and get an SSN before i got i married (advised by the one who organized our paper)... but its all up to u also. just dont let your I-94 expired coz u might end up getting after you get the GC... good luck!

It is easier to get it before you are married under your maiden name and then simply bring in your marriage license back to the SS office and they'll issue you a new SS card with your married name.

If you wait until after you marry, you still have to go through two steps because you are issued a SS number based on you I-94, which is under your maiden name. I know people who've said they had trouble getting their SS card after marriage because they technically have no legal identification that proves they are the person on the marriage license. I had a heck of a time trying to get a replacement card for my teenage son because he had no ID except his student ID. The SS office has some strict guidelines on what is acceptable ID. Before you are married, you have your PI Passport and I-94, but a marriage license alone is not acceptable as proof that it is you on the license. I know it sounds crazy but they are trying to prevent fraud.

It depends on the bank. For our CU, they would only accept a state issued driver's license or state ID, and in order to get a state DL or ID, you must have a SSN. Getting a SS card is the easiest and one of the most important first things all K-1's should do about 10-14 days after POE, in my opinion. You will be in the data base by then and the card usually arrives within 10 days.

Wow! Thanks a lot. Okay, I will get my SSN tomorrow. Good thing that my fiance will take off from work for his doctor's appointment. Anyway, my parents-in-law to be also suggested to have me get state ID so that I could go to bars and drink alcohol, have an ID to show in the bank and other establishment here.
