Hi!

Ask lang po ako kasi yong wedding ko sa August 8 pa.

Pero we're planning to get my checking account para meron na akong bank account kasi I can't have check cash kung wala akong bank account. We're thinking na baka needed yong SSN sa pag-open ng account.

What would be better, kuha na akong SSN ngayon or after na lang ng kasal namin. Then, saka na lang din ako open ng bank account.

You can get the SSN anytime you want. But if u will get it now, after you got married you will still need to have your name changed. And ilang months na lang din naman hihintayin mo. Town halls usually sends you the marriage certificate in 2-3 weeks time. But yes, if u want to open a bank account they will really ask for your SSN but with what we did coz husband and I opened our account to deposit the money that we got from our wedding. Obviously, I dont have SSN yet. I was able to open an account but I was asked to sign this tax paper (forgot what its called though) and I was told to give them my SSN once I have it. Didn't had any problems with the bank so far.

Ganun ba yon? This July yong expiration ng K1 Visa ko which is naguguluhan ako kasi May ako na-approve, I thought its 6 mos upon visa approval.

So kapag nag-expired na ang K1 Visa ko which is yong I-94, makakakuha lang ako ng SSN kapag dumating na ang GC ko.

Thanks for info. :)

Huhuhuhu...

Naguguluhan na po ako...

Sa POE ko, expiration ng 90 days ko eh, September. My wedding is on August 8. Pero yong k1 visa ko, expiration is July.

If I will get my SSN after my wedding, can I still get it? Or I have to wait for my GC para maka-apply ng SSN.

Kasi I read above that if my I-94 is expired before I get my SSN, I have to wait till I get my GC para maka-apply...

Let's say.. this is my scenario...

K1 Visa Expiration is July but I arrive here in US, June

90 Days Upon Entry Expiration is September but my wedding here in US, August

Probably, filing for AOS is also august (after our wedding)

Plan: Getting SSN now to open a bank account, but then, thinking of getting SSN after the wedding so that I dont have to go back and change my name.

think of it this way... you're in K1 and once you arrive in the US, you're only given 90 days to get married before it expires. same thing w/ your I-94 sa pag kakaintindi ko... ganu ba kalayo ang SSA office sa inyo??? its not really that bad to go back and to change your name after you get married or better yet after you get your GC. granted you have to wait maybe 15-30 mins or more para ma accommodate ka nila depende kasi kung gaano sila ka busy... sa akin kasi i went there 2 weeks after i arrived here then kumuha kami ng marriage license then pakasal then open a joint bank account etc and last send out our AOS (ginawa namin yun in 45 days ata)... i never went back to the SSA until i got my GC which is about 4 months later... just so it matches everything especially when i applied for my DL they want kasi to match all names... yun ang ginawa ko. but again some people did the opposite. pakasal muna sila then applied for an ssn or yung iba naman nag hintay ng GC bago kumuha ng ssn... i hope you'll make it work one way or the other. i know confusing talaga pag dating sa mga ganito  heheh

God bless!!!

Hi,K1 visa is good for 6months,while your I-94 is 90days for marriage.

I had my K1 visa October and I got here in the US January 18.After my 1week entry here..I went to SSA applied ssn with my maiden name then after we got married last February,I went back to SSA again to changed my ssn to married name..didn't encounter problems as long that your I-94 is still valid atleast 1month.When I went back to SSA to changed to married name,my K1 visa was expired already but my I-94 was still valid...

I-94 which is valid for 90days and you have to get married before it expires while K1 visa allows you to enter US before it expires.K1 visa is 6months validity.

So If I were you,I will get SSN now before my I-94 expires.Nung nag-open ako ng bank account, applied for state ID,they asked for my ssn.You might need ssn to open an account.Mas maganda na ang ready. Also sa mga paperwork, lagi ini-ask ang ssn.

I saw your timeline. You got ur visa May 20,so the expiration of ur visa is 6months from the date you had your medical,if its still like that...not July like you said

Then you arrived here June 5,so your I-94 expiration is on September 5 pa.May time ka pa mag-apply ng ssn mo using your maiden name then change it to married name after you got married.Make sure to change it to married name atleast a month before your I-94 expires.

Btw,best wishes to your upcoming wedding :star:

The question is.. which is more convenient for you. You need SSN to get a checking account. Do you want to get checking account now or later? And how far is the SSN office from your house?

Hi, I would suggests na kuha ko na agad ng SSN, because in my case I filed for SSN after marriage and also that time my visa was about to expire so the SSA did not honor my application they refuse to issue my SSN. Almost bank are not accepting individual/joint bank accounts if there is no SSN that`s their policy. ..You can get your SSN before u get married and have name change na lang , after marriage that`s better.

Best wishes and Good luck to your new life here in USA. God bless!

In my case, I got my SSN 2 weeks after I arrived here. I am not sure about other banks but Wells-Fargo required me to submit my SSN.

If you live near the SS office, then you might as well get your SS number now. Otherwise, you will have to wait until your GC arrives.

Goodluck.
