Hi. Would finding my fiance's ad (USC) on Craigslist be needing an IMBRA?

 uhm, no...

Which section of Craigslist? (just curious)

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

Hi. Would finding my fiance's ad (USC) on Craigslist be needing an IMBRA?

what did the ad say?

was it something like "looking for foreign fiance"???

NO, it was not not in that line. But stated that he desired for a woman of my nationality.

We met in Filippino kisses i paid, she didnt. It seemed to fit the criteria so i just checked yes on the form and gave the wesite info and moved on. I agree with Gary that its better to say yes and be wrong.

Mari,

My fiance and I met at Brazil Cupid. Since my attorney recommended, we also checked yes on the form and provided the website address.

As I can see so far, my fiancé and I made a good decision...

ok to clarify Im not ashamed or embrrased at all by using a dating site and I certainly wouldnt try to lie about it, I was just trying to be sure on answering that question on the form 129f and fill it in properly. So you guys are saying it dosent pertain to us? Thier asking if its a pay for a bride service basically?

No need to be ashamed! I would wager a very large percentage of VJ members meet the same way. And I am sure a very large number of applicants at the consulate met the same way. In fact, many consulates seem to prefer this to meetings arranged by family or friends in the USA which they always suspect as fraudulent. I think it is fairly well accepted in this age of internet. Cupid.com makes no apologies.

Also there is no problem in giving this information even if the agency turns out not to be covered by IMBRA, better to err on the side of caution. Again there is no problem with legitimate matchmaking agencies and legitimate relationships developed this way.

Garry,

What do you mean by "Cupid.com" makes no apologies"?

I'm asking because my fiancé and I met through one of these "cupid.com" websites...

Thanks!

Lu

What exactly is the difference between a legitimate matchmaking agency and an illegitimate one? And for that matter a legitimate relationship and an illegitimate one?

Only the consulate knows for sure.

The relationship must NOT be primarily for the purpose of immigration benefits. The burden is on YOU to prove it isn't. In many countries (high fraud incidence) the ASSUME the relationship for is the pupose of fraud and you need to climb the mountain to prove otherwise.

Legitimate matchmaking agencies are those where the principles are not involved in trafficking humns for prostitution or scamming USCs fro money with no result. They are the ones that connect people together for a fee (or free)

Not sure. If you meet a human on "plentyoffish", is it an IMBRA? No, it isn't.

Someone made the comment that they are not ashamed for meeting online (I think the OP) I only mentioned this as there is no need to be ashamed, how is a website which specializes in foreign (asian in this case) any different than the local "Cupid, com" that advertises on the radio, give money back gaurantees of finding the "perfect match" etc.? The practice is well accepted in the USA for meeting a woman across town, why not from across the world. Just a generic reference. Means nothing.

Can someone look at this website and tell me if it falls under IMBRA or not? I really dont want to be guessing on this, as it seems the penalties are pretty harsh.

They admit that they are an IMB, as defined by the IMBRA, and that they collect the required information and perform the required background checks.
