This subforum has not been lively lately and I am bored so I thought I would just start this new topic.

With my wife and I leaving Vietnam soon at the end of the month, I've been thinking about our major changes in our lives and big decisions we will have to make when we get there. When we arrive in the United States the 1st week before the 4th of July, we are flying to my wife's Aunts and Uncles in Columbus Georgia (2 hr from Atlanta) where she will visit them and her cousins, that she hasn't seen in a long time, and then see her family members that she has never met before. That will be a fun trip for me and her. After that, 4th of July weekend, we will head back home to Houston and spend the Holiday with my family and introduce my wife to everyone on my side. When the weekend is over I plan to jump into work, where my newly promoted position is waiting.

Then starts the planning for our lives and our future. Since working over a year in Vietnam I have saved up a lot of money (gotta love cheap cost of living in VN) and we will start looking at new houses the week after 4th of July. We have been looking on the internet and seen some that we like but we have to look at them in person to really make a decision. If we can't find a house that we like then we've decided to build a new one the way that we like it. My wife and I found a new subdivision close to my work that is really new and the houses in that neighborhood retain their value pretty well and also the schools are one of the best in the country, so we are set on the location of where we want to live.

We are also going to look at cars for both her and I whenever we get back. I plan to take her to driving school which teaches in Vietnamese and try to get her to take the test to get her liscense as soon as possible so we can get her a new car. When I left for Vietnam I sold off all my cars and have no mode of transportation now. For myself I've been looking into buying a new Lexus GS430 since I've been admiring that car for so long now. My wife really wants and decided on the new Honda Accord because they have it in Vietnam and she really likes the way they look.

My wife plans to go to school after things get settled down after we get back from Vietnam, and she wants to go to a beautician school to learn the hair and facial trade so that she can get a job within the year. After my wife works a few years, gains the experience, and saving up both of our money we want to open up our own business where she can manage and run so we can get good incomes from both me and her. My wife managed her families propane business in Vietnam so she feels comfortable being management.

Things are getting exciting for my wife and I, while we wait in Vietnam until the day we leave. We have been looking at various small things that will let us live comfortable and we both can not wait.

What are some of the things you and your spouse/fiancee plan on in the future whenever they make the trip over to America?

A new house we are looking into building if we can't find the one we like used:

Well it has been a real fun time myself learning to be non single again after 15 years happily alone. Myself I took a leave of absence from work and living on savings and making money building a new hair cutting business for my wifes Uncle here. Trang is going to school now to learn hair cutting and supposed to take over her Aunts business as she wants to retire. I also have learned to build a hair cutting shop from scratch and plan on in the future opening a couple more for her to learn to run and also for me to help out. Of course I was going to go back on the road soon and hopefully will do so soon.

I just bought a new car for my wife but got her the KIA instead of the honda accord as the price was awesome and the warranty is outstanding now. She loves that car a lot and is treating it like a kid. Trang has been really coming along and laugh now at the crying she did the first couple of weeks. It broke my heart then but seeing her taking to this country so fast is funny now. All in all it is still a wild and crazy ride but I feel I can eventually settle into the flow of things. I think my wife is crazy and she thinks I am crazy so we are made for each other.

that sounds good,so once my husband is here he plans to work in network infrastructure and security of hawawy and cisco systems.is that good?

Well good luck and all. There are many that can do that stuff here but in certain areas of the country they are still easy to find work doing that. Usually from that employment one goes through employment agencies and do casual work and rarely get on full time with a company.

I plan on making her a nice grilled Salmon dinner with fresh Papaya for dessert.

Does this satisfy your interest?

I plan on getting my wife a double cheese burger from Macdonald's as soon as we hit JFK airport. she love burgers from Lotteria so I want to introduce her to Macdonald's.

Good luck on your house Dai! I wish I can buy a house when my wife comes over...However, we're still living with my parents. Shes gonna do nails with my mom since we already have a salon up and running. My RSX only have 29K miles on it so theres still a good 100K left on the engine, so we dont need a new car anytime soon. We're gonna save up and hopefully buy a house in a couple of years.

Dai, it sounds like you will be very busy right away. I am thinking of just taking it slow at first and letting Hai Au settle in to the new surroundings. She said she wants to get back into school to improve her English and look for a part time job. I was thinking that maybe a translating job for a company or the schools might be a good fit for her. We will have to do the new vehicle thing since I drive a pickup, I was thinking something like the Honda CRV. I am hoping we can get in on the good bargains still available. My mom and sisters are transforming the "man cave" into a more female friendly environment, they don't ask me for decorating ideas but to just keep the money coming. :help: We will do a kitchen remodel together so that will be the first test for our relationship. I showed her some kitchen ideas on the internet and she was just amazed at what an "American" kitchen was like. No 2 burner propane stove and sink built into floor ala "Vietnam " kitchen. I told her about a dishwasher and she immediately informed me that dishes will be done by hand!! I have to laugh because her American uncle bought his VN. wife a new dishwasher and she uses it to store dishes, has not used it once in 3 years much to his chagrine. She is really looking forward to having a big yard so she can plant a lot of flowers and i think she has her eyes on one of my vegetable gardens for her VN. vegetables. I told her it would be ok as long as it results in a steady supply of pho and other VN. delicacies. I had a tree die last year so I told her I would wait until she got here to replace it so we can plant one to commemorate our new life together. The whole thing will be a HUGE adjustment for both of us initially, but I think we will be ok as long as I say yes to everything she asks!! (just kidding.........................................I think.) We have the interview June 22nd so I will be going over there on the 18th, that is the only thing on our mind for right now. We wish everyone the Best of Luck on your present or future lives together, we are praying God blesses ours and yours. Take Care all!!

This is an excellent topic; Most VJ threads focus on the prosaic details of the immigration process, while this is far more creative.

I just landed a position at one of the best high schools in Baltimore. Though I was only planning on staying here two more years, if this turns out to be a good fit, we may stay a bit longer. My fiancée is also a teacher and looks forward to teaching again once she gets EAD. Both of us are interested in earning PhD's, but are in no rush.

We are considering moving out to western Maryland, where my sister's family resides; she is a country gal and I've always been drawn to nature. We shall have at least two more years in Baltimore, as I've mentioned, so we've got plenty of time to find a place out there.

My fiancée is quite an ambitious person; Over the past year she's been able to save 100% of her teaching salary by tutoring both children and adults during evenings and weekend; She types other teachers' exams for a small fee; she translates documents; She takes on other teachers' duties of staying at the school over the weekend. She tells me that part of this is to keep busy until we're together, but I see it as her willingness to work hard to achieve her goals. I believe that she shall thrive here in America due to the combination of ambition + opportunity.

Oh, and she plans on bringing her dog along with her. I've met her last summer while visiting and she is rather adorable. She's a pomeranian-poodle mix, pomapoo, named Cherry. Very intelligent dog and she's been an excellent companion to my fiancée. I've never had a dog of my own, so that might be one of the biggest adjustments e.g. getting up early/late to walk her.

All the best to you on your journey.

My wife and I moved to Fargo, North Dakota then went ice fishing for Walleye. No traffic jams up here although it was a real shock for her the first winter in 2008. She adjusted very well and we have a beautiful home with two beautiful daughters. She still needs the practice of driving a car on polished ice roads. We just planted a 400 sq.ft. garden. I am interested as to how her Vietnamese vegetables will grow this year. We bought a lot of plants in the twin cities at the farmers market. The Basil and Mint are growing like crazy. There is nothing like growing your own vegetables.

I plan to buy my wife a brand new Huffy Newport from this place:

http://www.amazon.com/Huffy-Newport-Womens...6217&sr=8-4

and then once she can comfortably master this monster, I plan to have her trained and work at this place:

http://www.yelp.com/biz/colorado-gentlemens-club-houston

If she asks for anything like your wife, a new Accord, I'll tell her this "This is America! You work your butt off to earn for what you want! Money doesn't fall from the sky!!!"

I myself am driving this for the last 25 years, and amazing it's still running well:

Life is gewd!!!!

Just remember, life over there in VN is NOT real! Your money will be worth a LOT less once you get back over here. Back to reality, cowboy!

We're short about $500 for the down payment though. I think her tips at Colorado this weekend should probably take care of it. I'm crossing my fingers!!
