Egypt is the second largest recipient of US foreign aid after Israel.

Foreign aid is a bribe but usually cheaper than outright war. The U.S. economy was a major "weapon" in our arsenal but now our threat is that we won't pay our debts and the global debt collectors aren't likely to use force without destroying their own economies.

That's a pretty cynical way of looking at it.

It's realistic as no nation ever became developed solely through foreign aid. Direct foreign investment by business is far more important and East Asia is a fine example of a formerly poor region that is far more prosperous because they had the drive to better themselves.

We're not providing aid for Israel to bribe them into being our ally or to stay out of fights.
