I just received my SSN with specification "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION"....What does it mean?

I applied it with my Work permit evidence......Do I need to re-apply or update my status with SS office because now I already have my Green card.

07-20-05 : Sent I-129F to CSC

07-21-05 : Petition I-129F received

10-24-05 : Thailand received

10-29-05 : Received letter by snail mail

12-22-05 : Interview date

12-23-05 : Visa approved

01-20-06 : Enter the US

02-03-06 : Date of Marriage

AOS & EAD

02-21-06 : Sent I-485 and I-765 to Chicago

02-27-06 : Notice dated

03-14-06 : Biometrics appointment for AOS & EAD

05-11-06 : EAD Approved

05-16-06 : EAD Received

06-08-06 : AOS Interview --> APPROVED --> Welcome Letter was mailed (Case Status Online)

06-20-06 : Green card received

Remove of Condition

05-19-08 : Mailed I-751 to CSC via Registered mail

05-20-08 : Notice date

05-21-08 : Check was cleared for $545

05-22-08 : Certified Mail receipt

05-23-08 : Received Notice in mail

05-29-08 : Biometric Notice Date

06-13-08 : Biometric Appointment

08-22-08 : Card Production Ordered!!!

08-29-08 : Greencard arrived

It only means that you can't use the SSN card as a work authorization document and must provide an EAD card or I-551 card when you apply for a job to establish you are authorized to work. It doesn't otherwise affect the validity of card or number. Now that you have proof of permanent residency (I-551 stamp) you can apply for an unrestricted SSN card, which can be used as work authorization.

do you still need a SSN if you already have an EAD? it seems like it's pointless to get the SSN if you can't use for employment without EAD anyways.

06-24-2006 NOA1

09-13-2006 TOUCHED for the first time :)

09-19-2006 IMBRA RFE mailed by CSC

09-20-2006 TOUCHED

09-23-2006 IMBRA RFE received

09-25-2006 IMBRA RFE mailed overnight to CSC

09-29-2006 IMBRA RFE received by CSC

Yes, because at some point your employer will need to provide you with a W-2 and report your wages to SSA and the SSN is needed for that. Plus you need the SSN to file your income taxes if your have earnings to report.

i guess what i'm saying is to wait till green card is approved before applying for a SSN (for employment purpose) and get an EAD instead? thanks in advance
