The rollers do less damage than the shakers, and to me are kinda...dare I say fun? Maybe I am California jaded. LOL.

haha, i think they are fun too! guess i'm jaded also :P

Just look at it this way...in a hurricane or tornado, your house may be destroy and all your things blown to the next county. In an earthquake, your house may be destroyed...but at least all your stuff is still there (in various forms of destruction!)

-Blu-(NOT blowing the the wind!)

exactly! now a tornado or hurricane would be scary!

they say standing in the doorway is a big no-no as most are not load bearing walls, same goes for getting under a table etc..... the best thing they say to do is crouch beside a large piece of furniture.. if something falls it will hit that first

well if your house is gonna collapse, then you are squished either way. but overall, thats what i was taught in school. personally, i like my surfboard method best! :P

After few years living in the city on the east coast, I have this desire has been arisen moving to somewhere like a country side and specifically beach area somewhere like in california with all the nature and nice sunny weather. I even listen that song "california dream" everyday.I really want to know what it's like to live there. is it really a paradise for immigrants? just a random thought..

I use to live on the east coast in connecticut and massachussetts .

I moved out here to california oct 1982 and have been here ever since.

I love it here for only 45 mins north of where I live, I can be in the mountains and snow

and about 30 mins going south to the many beaches at the pacific ocean.

How many places can one go to ski in the mountains and to the beach all in the same day???

Yes we have earth quakes and occasionally a tornado but we do not have Hurricanes or a lot

of Tornadoes.

This is why so so many people of all races move or want to come here is because of the weather.

I will soon be married to my beautiful filipina fianc'ee and she cannot wait to be with me and living in california

I just moved to Walnut Creek (about an hour east-ish of San Francisco), we were married in Vegas this weekend, and so far it's everything I expected. And more. It's a wonderful place, everyone is really friendly, but I already have a number of friends here which has made it easier. Loving California so far :D

California is beautiful if you can afford to live here

With the state of the economy today I would be afraid to move from somewhere I was "set up" to a state in crisis...

This from last night's news:

California's government is 50 days away from a financial "meltdown" if Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and lawmakers fail to close the $24.3 billion budget gap. But Schwarzenegger would rather see the government screech to halt than agree to a high-interest loan.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/11/c...a_n_214161.html

SACRAMENTO, CA -- Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said he will let the state government shut down if lawmakers cannot agree on a budget by the end of the month.

It could mean DMV offices will close, state parks will be shut down and welfare offices will stop sending out checks.

"The closure would send a message to the world that California is unstable and not a good place to do business," said political anaylist, John Syer.

A joint committee of state Senators and Assembly members have been meeting since Friday to come come up with a budget solution.

Democratic leaders said they will not eliminate entire social service programs which the governor is demanding.

Schwarzenegger also vowed to prevent the state controller from issuing revenue anticipation warrants, or RAWs, if the budget isn't approved by July 1.

The warrants allow the state to borrow even when the money can't be repaid in the same fiscal year.

I don't even want to imagine the lawlessness in the ghetto if they stop handing out welfare!! :help:

The grass is not always greener...

I have lived here almost my entire life. It's a great state, but expensive. The people are nice, but I stay out of the city (I live about an 1.5 hours north of Los Angeles). The traffic is horrendeous most of the time, but especially rush hour. The weather is very diverse depending where in the state you live. But it is one of the only states that you can drive to the forest, ocean and desert all in the course of a day. If you have any specific questions...ask away.

Just curious, where do you live ? I live in Oxnard... And BTW for the topic question South California is awesome !

I live inland of Los Angeles 60 miles, where I grew up. I can't think of much to complain about here. The air is not the cleanest in the summer, and it gets hot from mid July-late October. But, there is so much great stuff to do each weekend here, I can't see myself moving away again (I lived in Michigan 2 years  ).

That is not true. It doesn't matter... Any Door frame would be better supported than being under the mid section of a ceiling where something could fall on your head. In your average 1 or 2 story home the greatest dangers would be something like non-anchored book cases o other heavy objects falling on you or a gas leak. In a doorway you are usually protected from heavy objects falling on you, unless someone is a practicle joker and has propped up an anvil or open bucket of paint over an open door like in the cartoons.

To answer the original question though - California is a beautiful state. I have lived here just about my entire life in both northern and southern Ca.. unfortunately - it's been taken over by nutjobs so everyone is taxed to death - but the weather is nice and there is much to see and do all over the state. I cannot wait to show my fiancee around - especially wine country.

this is a long shot, but this isnt by any chance David Allen who lived in Garden Grove in the 80s-90s is it? and worked on cars and had a dog named Tiny?

Many are certain that standing in a doorway during the shaking is a good idea. That's false, unless you live in an unreinforced adode structure; otherwise, you're more likely to be hurt by the door swinging wildly in a doorway or trampled by people trying to hurry outside if you're in a public place.

http://www.consrv.ca.gov/index/Earthquakes...uakes_what.aspx

i heard about crouching next to a big piece of furniture during an earthquake during a newscast after and earthquake.. but this site doesn't mention anything about that it says to do this during an earthquake...

If you're indoors, stay there. Get under -- and hold onto --a desk or table, or stand against an interior wall. Stay clear of exterior walls, glass, heavy furniture, fireplaces and appliances. The kitchen is a particularly dangerous spot. If you're in an office building, stay away from windows and outside walls and do not use the elevator.

I live in Northern California and I love it here. I don't think Southern California is for me....too much traffic....too hot. I stayed in Barstow and traveled to Los Angeles everyday.....the heat was like being in South HELL

It was too much for me. It gets hot occasionally up north too but not 120 degrees hot.

From Sacramento, the Ocean, the mountains, skiing, lakes, camping, hiking, forest, the city, the country....all of it is within a 2 hour drive. The desert is beautiful at sun set and sunrise but it is about a 6 hour drive from where I live....which is fine with me. That is why I love it here, all of the scenery I enjoy is a car ride away.

You just need to make sure you find a place you like. When we moved here in 1985, I had never been to California before. So, I thought all of California was a beach front, palm trees, and earth quakes. LOL..... when we arrived in Sacramento which was not as developed then as it is now, I was disappointed because it was all pastures, brown grass, and cows. I remember thinking, "What happened? Where are the palm trees, the ladies in shorts and bikini tops roller skating, and THE BEACH? Where is it?" So just remember that we have deserts and a lot of brown grass and cows as well as beaches, redwoods, and mountains.

Sacramento has a more reasonable cost of living that other places in CA and is relatively family friendly...don't have earthquakes either.

If you come, I hope you enjoy the diversity the state offers.

Best wishes

As a ex-californian I can honestly say I am very glad to be out of that god forsaken state. I was born there, lived there till I turned 13 and then moved away. I have been back several times and each trip re-afirms why I moved away. It's a nice place to visit but live...hmm you have to make at least $4000 a month to live there comfortably. The last time I was down there which was a few years ago, a loaf of bread was $5 and a gallon of milk was $7. I dont know about now. I looked at some places to rent and #######, $1000 a month for a studio. No thanks I'll stick to Idaho with our 4 seasons, cheap cost of living (you can rent a 4 bedroom house for <$900/month) and our .89 loafs of bread. Crime is another problem in Cali, there is lots of it.

I don't know where you were but that is not the case where I am. I have lived here a long time and have not noticed any crime. Maybe you were in LA area where rents are high but people also earn higher salaries. So it is not like in the mid west or the south where you can earn less and of course things will cost less too. People earn more money in Los Angeles area ans San Francisco than you would earn in Idaho....so it follows that things will cost more too. Rents are not that high in other parts of the state, and food doesn't cost as much as you've mentioned either unless you buy it from the gas station. I think you just needed to look around for housing more and shop at reasonable places.
