After few years living in the city on the east coast, I have this desire has been arisen moving to somewhere like a country side and specifically beach area somewhere like in california with all the nature and nice sunny weather. I even listen that song "california dream" everyday.I really want to know what it's like to live there. is it really a paradise for immigrants? just a random thought..

I have lived here almost my entire life. It's a great state, but expensive. The people are nice, but I stay out of the city (I live about an 1.5 hours north of Los Angeles). The traffic is horrendeous most of the time, but especially rush hour. The weather is very diverse depending where in the state you live. But it is one of the only states that you can drive to the forest, ocean and desert all in the course of a day. If you have any specific questions...ask away.

Thank you folks for sharing the ideas:

For marilyn,

yea, i am fully aware of that earthquake :dead: but don't we all have more chance to die in plane crash or car accident etc???

For blu,

I was only thinking about LA and SoCal areas maybe. if thats true what you've mentioned, "But it is one of the only states that you can drive to the forest, ocean and desert all in the course of a day." I am nothing but even more enchanted to move into that state.

We are currently living in NY and have been seriously talked about it over a year and it is not easy to make decision because his job and our living is set up here.

it isn't the fact that I could die in an earthquake that scares me it is the earthquakes that scare me....

lsat summer they had a 5. something one and our whole place shook for what seemed like an eternity... but was only maybe 30 seconds or less but I didn't stop shaking for at least an hour or more

Been in Los Angeles since feb. So been here for three of those. the biggest of three i didn't feel neither did my hubby but perhaps that had something to do with the fact we were out at a party  but the other two tiddlers i was like what was that supposed to be  . I have to admit though its a bit weird coming from a place that doesn't have them really.

I like the place, for a city I dont think its as crowed as London but then that's cos the streets are wider closer to the beach the cooler it gets so you dont need to use air con as much but then too close and you might need heating. Hubby says where we are is just about right cos you still get the ocean breeze but not too much.

once you have felt one that is over a 5 you will know what I mean ..lol we were only about 20 miles from the epicenter with the big one I felt last year

my biggest fear for some reason is that there will be an earthquake when I am taking a shower.. so that is what I think about when I take a shower :P

I was born n raised here in so cal. I dont know if its "paradise"...guess that depends on what u consider paradise. its a huge state too, depends where u live i suppose. dont worry about quakes, just part of living here. i dont have much to compare it to, i moved out of state once briefly n was anxious to come back here, but more cause this is my home, its what i know. i like it here.

i think the one i didn,t feel was a 4 something bordering on a 5 but i felt the one in the uk. which may have been simular size it knocked chimneys down and stuff. thought it was another bloody lorry going buy our old house.

I know what you mean about not wanting one when you are in the shower.....Nobody wants to have to evacuate to outside in their undercrackers  . I am always a bit concerned if it did happen and i had to rush outside that it would happen when i am in a state of undress

I have been here. like I said most of my life. I was here when a big one hit in Sylmar...6.5 I think, and then lived around the corner from the epicenter of the Northridge earthquake in 1994...or was it 1993? Anyway...sure, earthquakes can be scary, but we experience them on a rather regular basis, and usually never feel them or even notice. We differenciate them between "rollers" and "shakers". The rollers do less damage than the shakers, and to me are kinda...dare I say fun? Maybe I am California jaded. LOL. Anyway...we are thinking of moving to Tx now because it is very expensive to buy a house here. I am FAR more fearful of tornados than earthquakes!!!

Just think...here in California...you can go snow skiing and water skiing all in one weekend! I love it here. If we could afford to stay, we would. But I recommend it. Just RESEARCH the areas you are interested in moving into. There are some not so nice areas, which is true for any state I guess. Be sure you research! We use Wikipedia a lot for that.

lol, u dont run outdoors if there is an earthquake. you get in a doorway or under something sturdy and duck, n cover up the back of your neck with your hands. Or do like me, pretend u are on a surfboard n ride it out lol.

haha, that is why i never sleep in the buff, never know there could be a fire or something that awakens me, n i couldnt run out my house nude! haha

Just look at it this way...in a hurricane or tornado, your house may be destroy and all your things blown to the next county. In an earthquake, your house may be destroyed...but at least all your stuff is still there (in various forms of destruction!)

they say standing in the doorway is a big no-no as most are not load bearing walls, same goes for getting under a table etc..... the best thing they say to do is crouch beside a large piece of furniture.. if something falls it will hit that first
