K1 Visa coming to USA flight question

It took me 7 months and 2 weeks from start to finish and now it's time to bring my angel home, and I am going to get her.

My question is, I am going without luggage but I am allowed 2 for check in, and she is allowed 2 for check in

What do you think of me taking 2 suitcases of her stuff and she takes 2 suitcases. Do you think that would cause a problem with immigration at the airport.

Because I will be leaving with no luggage and coming back with luggage. Will they question that, and if I say it's just her stuff and not mine, because she is moving here with K1 visa, will that be a problem, will they say, that's not allowed. Do I need to declare on that duty paper that I am bringing stuff back even though it's not mine.

That luggage scenario is very common here on VJ. Check with your airline as to the luggage allowances. Don't forget the carry ons too.

Congrats and safe travels!

They really don't care if the items are yours or not - they may ask if you packed the bag yourself - as a security question (before departing for the airport I'd open each suitcase/bag, look inside so you're vaguely familiar with the items and leave it at that.)

It also depends what airline are you flying. My husband flew with me also, PAL. I had 2 luggages, the funny thing was they had me transferred some of my stuff from one luggage to another coz the other one was over 20kg. We thought it would depend on total weight per passenger but it seems that per passenger/ per luggage...

So better call your airline for specific instructions.

Fly safe ! :innocent:

Immigration, customs and airline restrictions are 3 different things. Airlines allow 2, immigration has nothing to do with it and customs cares how much and of what you bring in, not how many suitcases. You should be able to go through customs together or at least one right after the other, so if they have questions you will be together to answer them.

You should be fine. Just read the luggage guidelines for your airline...they seem to change often. I went to Nicaragua for 5 months and returned with my love and a Nicaraguan kitten. No problems. I had all the papers for the kitten and the bags were fine. Good Luck and Congrats!!

No problem. I did the same for several trips, but my suitcase in an empty larger suitcase and brought it abck with Alla's stuff. If you have two tickets you get four bags. Note that on many trans-oceanic flights they allow up to 27kg per bag. Check your airline restriction.

Yep, I've also had to open suitcases in the middle of the airport to transfer items so both bags were under the weight limitations (I did try to pack to stay under but I guess I was a little off) it was a matter of 1 kg but they didn't let it slide.

They usually don't weigh the carry-on bag so I put small heavy stuff in it, even it means carrying it around the airport till boarding the plane.

We did what you are thinking of doing. (We had 2 checked bags each and 1 carry on each, mostly with his stuff.) I called and spoke to the supervisor of CBP at Houston airport to ask what you want to know. We had a computer (the inside bits) and some CDs and other electronic items, and old coins. I specifically wanted to know about myself since I was going through a different immigration line at the airport. He said not a problem at all and just write "household goods" on the customs form with no value. Nothing was questioned at the airport at the immigration line or passing through the customs line where you hand over the form.
