Hi,

My family is traveling to New York City in August. If you have either been to or live in New York you certainly have more experience on the city than I do. This will be our first trip. Any advice on transportation (to/from airport taxi or shuttle bus) (best way to get around NYC - subway, how to purchase tickets, etc) and when to visit tourist attractions and what attractions to visit (how much time does it take to visit each). We will only be there for 3 full days and want to prepare an itinerary as best as possible.

Thanks.

what airport will you be flying to?

I was about to ask that.

to the OP...... if you want to tour the Statue of Liberty book online ahead of time. The tour is free but you pay for the ferry ride.

Um, NYC has just about everything you can think of ... in stuff to do, places to eat and ways to get around! :o And it's very very big:D

Maybe if you gave some kind of info on what you like & want? And what kind of budget you have as well, as somethings, such as Broadway plays, sports events & concerts, can be rather expensive, while museums and galleries range from free to moderately priced.

Google, however, will probably be your best resource :)

I went last year and managed to cram into 3 days plenty of stuff. We saw the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, a broadway show, dinner at Tavern on The Green, a tattoo, lots of drinking, shopping, more eating at fab restaurants and did I mention some more drinking?

JFK - Thanks for the statue of liberty advice. I will definitely book early.

You can take a train all the way from JFK to NYC.

it's the Airtrain

Always a fun trip! I don't take the train anymore :P

I always use a car service. It's $50 from JFK.

Actually, the AirTrain goes to a Subway, LIRR or Bus junction point, not into Manhattan (what most people consider "New York City"... seeing as how JFK *IS ALREADY* physically in NYC :D )

Google "JFK AirTrain" for details :)

You don't need to book a tour to the Statue of Liberty, just go early enough, hopefully there won't be any school visit. You just pay $12 for the Statue and Ellis Island (if you want).

Use the metro, you can buy a metrocard in every station $2 per ride.

Ferry ride for 45 mins is i guess close to $20. You can also do 1 hour and 1 and a half hour ride. We were there for the Intrepid like 3 weeks ago, it was very nice. Get also the All day Metro pass..saves a lot too. With the traffic in NYC, u will end up spending much for taxi ride than food, lol. They have a guide to NYC at the subway stations, u can pick one too.

We are located just 45 min train ride or 30 min in express train but we dont go to the city much often. Its just too much traffic, confusions and money, lol.

Enjoy your stay in NYC! :star:

Avoid taking cabs everywhere as it can get expensive. The subway is relatively easy to take once you get used to it.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Yes, take the AirTrain from JFK to the subway if you want to save on cash... Might take an hour from airport to midtown using AirTrain to subway... i don't know how much a taxi would cost... i've never taken one from the airport!

Definitely get the Day Pass Metrocards, for the subway. i think they are $9 per day, unlimited ride. You can buy them from any subway booth, or from the metrocard machines.

If i had only 3 days to visit, i'd try to do the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island one day.

Maybe a broadway show one night... You may be able to get discount tickets at the tkts booth in Times Square.

Also, in the summer time there are some free events in Central Park, which may be cool, too.

http://www.summerstage.org/

There are free events in Brooklyn's Prospect Park as well, should you want to venture to the boroughs...

http://www.briconline.org/celebrate/

Maybe a walking tour for some history & intrigue...

And then spend your evenings experimenting with inexpensive, ethnic cuisine that you might not be able to find everyday in your hometown...

And then-- late night jazz at Smoke, or Brazilian samba and Haitian dance party at SOBs...

okay, okay...i'll stop
