it depends on her education, but for some things, she may need to do a test in the states to have her licence transferred over.

My fiance has earned a college degree. I was wondering if her education is still valid in the US ? if not, what will she have to do to make it so it is valid in the US ?

Maybe.

Google "ECE" it is one of several accredited education evaluation agencies. It is the one we used. You will send copies of her original transcripts for secondary (high school) and college education along with a certified translation if needed. They will do a basic evaluation for $85 or a "course by course" evaluation for $135. I suggest the "course by course"

Alla's masters degree from Ukraine was givien full faith and credit as an equivilent US masters degree, as was her teaching certificate from Ukraine. However in order to get a teaching certificate here she needs 3 more credits of English, 1 credit of US history and 1 credit of "special education instruction", these are state specific rules and vary by state.

You can begin this now if you want. Just have her email copies of her transcripts and you can get them translated and send them for evaluation. It takes about a month. If her education was not in English, she will likely have to take the "TOEFL" exam to evaluate her English skills if she will continue her education here. It is required by many (but not all) universities and colleges here for foreign educated students. Google "TOEFL" for lists of dates and places. It is given all over the world. Alla took the exam here, our son took it in Ukraine. It is INTENSE and requires far more than minimal English skills to get an acceptable score. I would doubt most native English speakers at less than high school level could get an acceptable score, but that is just my opinion from doing the practice tests with Alla. It is designed to evaluate if the student can handle college level English, it is not a "beginners" test.

Valid to continue studying? Or to get a job in her field? It all depends. If it's to continue studying Gary and Alla's post is a great one. To get a job it will depend on her field and the job she'll be applying for, but getting a translation of her diploma will be good for either option.

Depending on the degree, as Gary and Alla have stated is the first lead. For "other" types of degrees it may depend on your state's accreditation requirements.

For example my Alla has a Cosmetology license (hairdresser). Here in Illinois, they will recognize that but she will still need to complete a certain number of hours of additional classes (more US specific training). She can get hours credit for the number of years she has worked in that profession.

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

My fiance has earned a college degree. I was wondering if her education is still valid in the US ? if not, what will she have to do to make it so it is valid in the US ?

What is her course?

Her course is Chemical Engineering. She has her certificate. She just doesn't have her license yet due to the Exam. She already has taken it but failed and wants to retake it. Should she just wait to retake that same test here in the US ?

Im also a chemical engineer in the Philippines.

Most of my friends took Teofl and GRE since most of them are taking their masters and PhD here in the US.

Another chemical engineer VJ member from the philippines mentioned that there is another type of exam that would allow philippines chem eng'g graduate to do chemical engineering practicum in US companies. Please search for work or course in the philippines forum. Sorry but i could not remember the name of exam.

In my case, i used my job experience from the Philippines to get a professional certificate recognized here and other countries.

I'm still applying for engineering jobs here mainly due to my job experience and professional certificate...

Found it. Its called PE and FE test. This enable eng'g graduates to do practicum in the US. I'm not familiar with this exam. Other VJ member from the Philippines forum might be able to help you.
