You can get the Hep A & B shot as a combo now. There are many cases of Hepatitis here in America so its not a bad idea to get the vaccination regardless of if you are traveling.

Went to Egypt 4 times. Had a typhoid immunization first 3 times, then the oral typhoid vaccine the last time. Other immunizations were MMR, tetanus and the Hep series. Those immunizations were given at the Naval Hosp San Diego by their travel team who tell you what is needed to be safe.

Never did get sick!

my daughter and I are already fully covered on Hep A, but I think I will get both of us the typhoid vax before we go over this summer. I don't trust the quality of water in Giza, and even though I don't plan on ingesting it unboiled, it would ease my mind...

I didn't get any.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Been to Egypt more times than I should have...haven't had anything but a tetnus shot since I was 21... Got the Pharoh's Revenge, but never so bad that I was worried...

They don't have a vaccine for Ameobic Dysentry (or something similar... guess we'll never know exactly WHAT) which almost killed my friend when she was there.... but if they did, I'd take two of them before I went, and another one after I got there!!!!

And boiling the water doesn't work for everything... Filter AND boil... you're only hope to avoid something nasty. Water sits in tanks on the roof tops and they don't use any more sanitary cleaning methods on those tanks than they do their dishes... so you can only imagine in the heat of summer what all grows and multiplies in there... be careful even brushing your teeth with it...

Boiling does work for most things, like giardia, which is what i'm most worried about... but i'm taking along a water filter too just for double protection. my daughter's young and it wouldn't take much as far as GI distress to get her critically dehydrated.

They gave my husband and all the Iraqi refugees some pills to take before coming here to kill any worms. The funny part was there is an Iraqi rumor going around that the pills are for birth control. My husband saw them though and said it really is just worm medicine.

That's funny! If we had to depend on men to take birth control pills...we would all be pregnant all of the time!!!

I didn't get any additional shots before I went and don't think I plan on doing it this time either. What I did do was take pepto bismol for about 10 days prior to going...it really does work. It was good because it binds everything, but it was also bad, because it binds everything. I also took it in pill form some of the time I was in Morocco. I only had one day where things were not so good.

Washing fruits and vegetables (A MUST) in tap water is also troublesome, especially things like salad greens. A lot of the cooties in Egypt are in the food, not just the water. Worms are very common in Egypt as well, but I'm not sure of all of the types of ways they get them... I don't recommend ANY playing in the water... or going barefoot (or wearing flip flops outside) either.
