Hi, she wouldnt be eligible for medicaid/medicare if she came on a K1 or K3 visa since the sponsor swears on the affidavit of support that the recepient of the K1/K3 wont be a government charge and on any government aid programs. However the child once born, if born here would be a us citizen and eligible for medicaid/medicare.

The system is so screwed up. "Undocumented" AKA illegal women are eligible to be covered on medicaid and yet legal immigrants cannot be ?!?! :bonk:

Maybe it depends on the state you live in. A friend in California was able to avail maternity benefits (she's on K1 and processing AOS that time) through WIC/Medicaid. She had a C-section delivery and didn't paid a cent to the hospital. It didn't affect her AOS and was granted conditional GC after the delivery of the baby.

There's a 5-year residency requirement in Medicaid application for LPR, however it was waived if you are a dependent of a US veteran - provided you met the poverty line salary requirement.

The OP can adjust status immediately upon arrival in the US to get her GC, then inquire to the nearest SRS office. Try contacting you local health center too, they might be of some help.

Never ever say never

Hi, yes, WIC has programs to help with getting milk, juice and cheese etc. But you have to be under a certain income. We did not qualify as i made more than they would allow.

Chris

isn't there a WIC to help with both pre- and post-labor needs?

I can't really offer any advice to the poster other than consider maybe not having your baby at a hospital. People have and are still all over the world having babies the old fashioned way without some man/woman in a white coat sticking their hand up ye'r tang and telling you what to do. To be honest if cost is an issue and safety is also an issue consider finding a good midwife in your area. I'm sure 9/10 a good midwife will be not only less expensive but will likely have a lot more birth related experience and practice than the average doctor.

Just a thought.. then again I supposed I'm biased as my wife is training to become a midwife.

Good luck! :P

midwifery in the US is nothing like midwifery in the UK. midwives in the US are usually hospital based, and few practice home births. most states do not provide for the concept. my second child was a midi home birth in maryland, with the only midi practicing in that state at the time. my third child was supposed to be home birth with a DO who also delivered in home. he was in vegas that weekend at a convention, so i delivered the baby (with my first wife, helping, of course).

3rd child is easy for people educated in the concept of home birth. first child is too traumatic for people to go it alone unless in emergency or with medical training. prenatal is a must. failure rates in countries without are just too high to accept if money is the primary issue. 3K for delivery is dirt cheap. a healthy child that survives the birth experience is priceless.

Do you have AIM (Access for Infants and Mothers)in your state? I believe they are for women that may not qualify for Medicaid but have no money for prenatal/delivery. I think you have to pay a one time premium of 1.5% of your income. THey even pay your deductible if you have insurance, for your pregnancy if it is more than $500. You might check that out.
