You would need a visa. We had exactly the same problem and can tell you from experience. My wife got her AP and we headed to Montreal (i hour drive for us) We got to the border, 10 minutes away, and they said..."Sorry, come back when you have a green card" Fortunately we had it a few days later. Her green card had already been approved, we had a copy of the welcome letter with us. Nope. Has to be the green card.

I don't understand that at all. AP is supposed to be used before you get your GC...that's what it's for. Why wouldn't you be able to use your AP along with your passport?

Entering Canada is the problem, not returning to the US. It all depends on whether or not Canada usually requires a visitor's visa for people from the Philipines. Once she had her greencard Canada waives that visa requirement.
