Palin et al. need to drop it. It was a lame joke by a late-night entertainer. Making noises about Letterman being a pedophile and contributing to self-esteem issues of girls everywhere makes them seem like desperate, obstinate idiots. Letterman came out of this looking like an #######; I wouldn't say he was given a "free pass." But the longer the Palins drag this out (apparently they don't accept that Letterman was referring to the 18-year-old, not the 14-year-old), the more it seems that they are just looking for attention. Insinuating that the 14-year-old wouldn't be safe around Letterman is not a dignified response. I can get that they wanted to respond to the joke, but a statement would have done. This kind of thing doesn't merit all the coverage it has received. The back-and-forth is pointless; it's just not that important.

Exactly right.

Exactly wrong, Palins reaction to this has been normal. You would do the same if this was your child, and whats not mentioned here is his sarcastic and insulting apology. He says he was referring to Bristol but she wasnt even in town at the time or at the event he was referring too, how convenient that he got them mixed up. Coward if you ask me, Im surprised you fell for that nonsense.

Do I think he is a pedophile or suggesting rape or anything to that nature, of course not. I thinks its sad how this has become a platform to bash on the Palins.

If you don't think he's a pedophile, why do you suppose the Palin's are making him out to be?

Why don't they accept that it was just a poor joke made in bad taste and get beyond it? This seriously isn't that big a deal - as Empress of Groovy says - surely a PR statement condemning it would be sufficient.

The more they drag it out - the more it looks as if they're trying to milk the reaction.

This is the Palins response,

Sara - “Concerning Letterman's comments about my young daughter (and I doubt he'd ever dare make such comments about anyone else's daughter): 'Laughter incited by sexually-perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/NY entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands - that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone's daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.' ”

Todd Palin added: “Any 'jokes' about raping my 14-year-old are despicable. Alaskans know it and I believe the rest of the world knows it, too.”

I find Sarahs remarks reasonable, Todds comment yes a little over the top but lets keep this in perspective David made this comment about there 14 year old daughter and then doesnt even apoligize but is sarcastic and insulting. I would be down right pissed off if this was said about my girl.

This was a statement condemning what he said but you go on ahead trying to make this more about how they just want more publicity when it should be about that pathetic person named David.

 All you will get from the lefties is "Daves a chopfvc" then a rant about Palin.

Again, he's a late-night entertainer. Palin holds public office. She needs to be more considered than he does. I can understand that she and her husband wanted to respond, but their comments seem increasingly hysterical. Enough already.

Like I have been saying all along I really thinks its sad how your more concerned with the Palins wrong doings(in your eyes) than Davids.

How about not parading herself as the example for motherhood?

Exactly!!! Reminds me of that saying, "Don't pizz on my boots and tell me it's raining."

We can all laugh when it happens to your daughter. Ignorance is bliss.

Well, considering I don't have a daughter this isn't my issue, but if I did, I'd raise her exactly as my parents raised my sister and I - with the fear of God aka my father who would have killed either one of us if we were to get pregnant. Thus, my father made it known in no uncertain terms that if we were even so much as thinking about having relations with our boyfriends that we were to be put on the pill immediately. (My sister took him up on this when she was 17 years old - no questions asked. I didn't need to as I was older when I ventured down that road.) We were instructed that there would be no grandchildren in our home until we were married, and that if we were to get knocked up out of wedlock that it would be a very fast drive to the clinic thank you very much.

We weren't f'ing ignorant...actually we were probably the most informed b!tches out there. Thank God for my parents who made sure we knew what could happen to us - sex education began at 8 years old - and I'm grateful that they never held back when we had questions. My parents knew there was no bliss, no folly in ignorance just unwanted babies and STDs and they weren't about to let that happen to either one of us. Which is why when my son is older and he needs to learn about all of this, dammit, I'll sit him down the exact same way my parents did and give him the talk so that he can't declare ignorance either.

Stil trying to incite trouble I see... almost everyone is denouncing what Letterman said & most aren't saying anything negative about Palin other than she's over-reacting. Your entire purpose on these forums is to stir up controversy & I admit you're good at it, but this time your attempts are kinda lame.

Your statment of blaming the Palion's for Lettterman's remark is what I meant by ignorance. I am not questioning your morals and values. If more families instilled in their children what your instilled in you, there might be a reduction in teen pregnancies. But the fact of the matter is, teens have experimented with sex since the beginning of time, and they do get pregnant. It happend a hundred years ago, it happens today. It doesn't excuse an ignorant response from Letterman.

I actually thought it was funny. It was Todd Palin who remarked about rape - Letterman never said anything about that. And for a woman who paraded her family allover the country as if she was proud of her teenage daughter being knocked up, well then, you get what you deserve. She made her daughter a public spectacle - she's 18 - deal with it.

I agree with you in part hermana; but the joke was indeed in pretty bad taste.

Bristol was an unwed-mom-to-be. Was she supposed to hide at home? Hide the "shame" or "stigma"?

Wonder if there is more to this than appears on the vj radar?

it's rather amusing when it's the left (aka liberal) making the most noise about her situation.......

I'm on the "Left". (so they tell me anyway).

I don't care about Bristol Palin. Or her baby. Or her mom (unless she becomes a national political figure again, in which case I'll care). Or David Letterman.

The whole thing is stupid.

Iran is having historic elections today.

North Korea has imprisoned two journalists for 12 years hard labor.

Healthcare reform is on the national agenda this summer with a possibility of a breakthrough.

And what is VJ up in arms about? Letterman and Palin. Gevalt!

I prefer Marc's posts. They make much more sense.

you're not as left as you'd like to think you are.
