Liberal has a specific meaning to me and it's not simply 'not conservative'. I am also used to reserving labeling for those who actually belong to a political party. it's much more useful, in my opinion, to simply refer to opinions and views as they really are, rather than using labels and generalisations. Well, when actually discussing things as apposed to messing around, of course

Problem is, everyone on the left is scurrying to the center, but it is already occupied. Somebody has to stand on the left and not be afraid to admit it.

That they rush to label conservatives "right wingers", "homophobes", Bible thumpers", and the like, but are so resistant to admitting to being liberals is also laughable.

The problem is that the voting system in some states forces people to choose a party affiliation when the register to vote.

I have never once in my life been called a liberal, except on the VJ forums, so I think that speaks volumes about the skewed opinions here & very little about my views (and by extention the countless others labeled a liberal for no good reason at all). In fact except for my very low opinion of the Bush administration I doubt any of you even know what my views are (I have stated them a few times)... or care since that last thing most VJers want to do is learn from one another or have an actual debate about issues.

I could say the same thing. IRL, no one thinks of me as a homophobe, arrogant, superior, right wing, intolerant, or any of the other perjorative terms I get called here.

I am comfortable picking and choosing my fights, and finding allies where I can. But, things don't get decided in the center, they get negotiated along the edges. I am ill at ease in a room full of Republicans as much as I am in a room full of Democrats. I hate suits, and I hate hippies, but I will cut a deal with whoever I have to. It's just politics.

Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? That's something Anne Coulter would say (actually she has made statements similar to this). For one being far right or far left by definition means that your views are not consistent with the majority, which means that in a democratic society you are going to have a real hard time getting the votes needed to pass anything. Secondly centrists (IMO) tend to be more reasonable & willing to compromise, while the far right & far left will go out of their way to faciliate failure just to screw over the opposing party (and everyone loses). Partisan politics is a huge problem right now & the far right/left are very much to blame.
