Liberal has a specific meaning to me and it's not simply 'not conservative'. Ah but that's not how it works here (or on VJ at least). A person needs to be part of a "side" - having a clearly marked line between the two is the only way some of these folks can make sense of the world. Why else would they do it?

well, yeah! Why are so many on the left so unwilling to embrace the monicker? It's an honorable term with a long history. Instead of turning red in the face and crying about it, the left should embrace the word, the same way the right has embraced the word conservative.

Well for one I've said about 10,000 times that there actually is a very large group of people b/w the far right & the far left.... if you don't know they are called moderates. Time & time again I see the right label anyone with a different opinion as a liberal, which is inaccurate to say the least. Hell they even try to alienate anyone in their own party who isn't far right. On top of that the term liberal has been used & abused so much it really has very little meaning anymore, other than a derogatory term used by the right.

I know that I am talking to a wall & that the VJ right will continue to abuse the term because it is an easy way to feel better about their own views & demonize anyone with a different view. I come to the VJ forum as a form of entertainment now (certainly not for actual info now that my wife is in the USA) so the fact that 95% of the comments are nonsense doesn't really bother me that much anyways (well maybe a little, but it wears off once I sign off).
