People kill themselves for less. Sad but true.

Aye. It's sad but unavoidable. No business has the same needs forever.

I agree - but I don't understand why there isn't more openness and you these situations of being coming back from lunch to find that they've been let go.

Short of a major catastrophe - someone knows that they're going to be making layoffs well in advance of when they actually do.

the 2 main reasons they do layoffs in that manner are....

1- they don't want account sheets & rolodexes being taken out of the building.

2- they don't want company property going out the door.

one should be prepared usbs are cheap. ;)

So... you make sure you steal the stuff before you are laid off ;)

Worked for me - I got a laptop out of BP :P

It makes a mockery of the idea that companies actually care about their employees.

I am sympathetic to paying working people more, but to imply that management "does nothing" just betrays how little you understand.

Firing people with a moments noticed and providing little to no benefits is disgraceful. Executives get fired and walk away with gold bullion.

Even in AUS you get 4 weeks for every year you are there. Some places give you much more. My friend left BHP and received a decent $150K, as a blue collar worker.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

We actually had grown men crying when they heard their name called over the radio.

A job loss can be devastating. Especially when you know it means no more wedges. might happen, have had time to think about it, and still have no Plan B (because you can't always have a plan B ).

fixed

Again, with Australia? I thought you got this out of your system this morning.

Hey it is what it is. It's like blaming Toyota for building better cars than gm.

Now if you get fired there, you also pay a lower tax rate on your payout. Further, you have indefinite access to unemployment benefits. Benefits which are actually higher than someone working a 40 week on minimum wage job here. Heath care is obviously not an issue.

What we like to call, being humane. Be it left wing or right wing, either one of us could end up in that position. When you think of it, it's a federally run unemployment insurance policy.

Sounds like something to aspire to. But first, we need to eliminate the GOP.

That will take a lot of garlic and a lot of stakes...

Perhaps we can chain them all inside their coffins at night and then throw them into the sea ;)

They fear sabotage from the workers. Do it suddenly and they are too stunned to organize. It's a capitalist plot to keep the workers in their places.

I've heard that said before at work.. when they were laying off someone for not doing their job. They closed down their email, account access, killed the keys and all their codes, had their next shift covered by the a floater all the while they are sitting in the office with the boss telling them they don't have a job. Yet the next office over the admin guy is calling the next person on the hire list to come in that very day if he wanted a job? There's no mercy, no waste, it's fast and efficient and I support it when you have workers that are lazy and don't want to work but.. I really think they should be fair and give some notice but I suppose I can see their point in doing it quickly and avoiding angry workers taking it out on the company. It's eat or be eaten in the american job market I suppose? The average worker is at the bottom of the food chain.

I just don't get why they are against that. My brother is the biggest conservative rich ####### of them all, yet even he understands the need and has no qualms with providing fellow citizens with the basics. Actually nobody really has a problem with it. I did, until I came here and saw the other extreme.

It is what it is. The worker bees are just that which is why paid holiday is laughed at too - unless you have a commie boss ;)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Which is why you have to be more than average. The dog-eat-dog nature of the American workplace is designed to incentivize individual drive and entrepreneurship.

Huh? I've always had paid time off, ####### are you on about?
