I put the Green Cards in my safe. Should they be carried in a wallet like a drivers license?

I would think my stepson should carry his since he does not drive and has been carrying his passport. My wife has a Maryland drivers license.

congratulations!!! the best thing to do is to make photocopies of the GC and carry the copy, keep the cards in a safe place, i don't think u want to loose them...

Hello. My friend usually put a copy of the greencard in his wallet.

I will do it when I recieve it because it sounds really scare if I loose it.

It sounds like that we have to file the card ALMOST as same as from beginning if we loose it. (Time and Money)

the immigration gal that we saw made it very clear to me to carry this card with me at ALL times, when I came back from a visit to Canada June 12th the guy at the border told me the same thing.... do NOT lose it and keep it with me at all times.

If you want to carry it the entire time fine by all means carry it. But I would carry a copy and leave it at home unless you are traveling a good distance away from your home.

Permanent Resident Card

The Permanent Resident Card, Form I-551, is issued to all Permanent Residents as evidence of alien registration and their permanent status in the US. The card must be in your possession at all times. This requirement means that you are not only required to have a currently valid Form I-551 at all times, but also that you must carry your currently valid Form I-551 on your person at all times. The Permanent Resident Card currently is issued with a 10-year validity. You status as a Permanent Resident does not expire with the 10-year validity. Only the card expires. The card is only valid up to the expiration date and must be renewed before it expires.

A Conditional Permanent Resident is issued a card valid for two years. In order to remain a Permanent Resident, the Conditional Permanent Resident must file a petition to remove the condition during the 90 days before the card expires. The conditional card cannot be renewed. The condition must be removed or you lose your permanent resident status. (See Form I-751 and Form I-829

This is a 2 year green card, not to be confused with a 10 year permanent resident card.

You have to carry the Greencard with you at all times whether it is a 2 year or a 10 year card.....
