Hey guys,

So I am sure that there are a million other threads on this subject, however...........

I just went to get my SSN sorted at the Walnut Creek office in California. The lady there was very helpful, very pleasant and went through everything with me patiently and slowly. I decided to try my luck and ask about working, and she said, and I quote "as soon as you have your number, with your passport and visa that you have here, you're good to go". I asked if she was sure about a dozen times and she was adamant that I can work as soon as the SSN arrives in 2 weeks, or if I need it before I can go and get a print out from them. I even asked about temporary EAD's and gave here a million and one get out routes, but none were needed.

And that's that.

Am now completely confuzzled.

quick reply.

When your AOS case is judged, who does the judging?

SSA? or USCIS?

I think you will have your answer :)

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

WARNING: Phrases in this post may sound meaner than they were intended to be. Read the Adjudicator's Field Manual from USCIS

As far as I am aware, unless things have changed, you need an EAD, the previous poster is spot on with the comment about who you are applying too Social Security Office or USCIS!

Thanks.......................Paul

I had this same thing where SSA said that I could work when I have my SSN. I questioned this, like why then do i need to apply for EAD?? Anyway, I had to go back to SSA 6 weeks or so later to chase things up and got a different person. He started off saying the same thing but when I questioned it again he realized why... their system says that K1 people can work. It's a yes or no on their screen and it says yes, hence why that's what they tell you coz most don;t understand any different themselves. However, as the second SS administrator I spoke to realized, it is only a yes after receipt of the EAD. So you need to wait for your EAD i'm afraid! It won't be long...
