laughing.gif You know I read some of these posts and I think you guys cannot possibly be for real. And yet...

Come on - this is a stupid as it gets.

What is, that I asked you if Obama should of been aware of this? Did I say he should of known or that he was at fault in anyway, no I did not. I said it because often America is criticized of there ignorance when it comes to other cultures, with him being the president it will become a issue.

I see this kind of response from you alot, immature if you ask me. When I find something on VJ to be "as stupid as it gets" I just dont respond.

Whether he knows it or not is surely irrelevant to the taking of this photograph as it doesn't imply or convey the insult in question.

It takes a special kind of reasoning to suggest otherwise.

 Well what do you expect - its like you take this kind of cartoonish rubbish seriously enough that it requires us to have a "full and frank" discussion on the need for cultural awareness.

For heavens sake - someone took a picture while the guy was on the phone and somehow it has inferred that some sort of gross insult has occurred. If anyone was "insulted" by the display of Obama's soles - it would have been the bloody cameraman!

Now if Obama is photographed simulating oral sex on the receiver, rubbing it down his trousers or doing the "yada yada" hand gesture while on the phone to Netanyahu - there will be something to talk about.

This - not so much.

As an Israeli, I am really, really insulted.

Is it too late to retract my vote for Obama and cast it for Ron Paul instead? :P

As an Israeli, you shouldn't have voted for Obama in the first place.

Unless, of course, you're one of those... self-loathing Arab-sympathizing Jews who believe

in "peace" with the Palestinians.

Have to agree with Pike. I never come to OT and this is one of the reasons why. Mounds of garbage, really.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

mawilson isn't too far off the mark.. at least as far as many of my friends and family are concerned.

Let's just say they think of me as that poor, misguided one who just doesn't know any better.....

I don't know if I believe in "peace". At this point I'd settle for some kind of stable co-existence that doesn't involve convulsions of warfare every few years.

I was there during the Scud attacks in 1991, the Lebanon war in 2006, and during the bus/cafe bombing campaigns of the mid 1990s. During the bus/cafe bombings of 2002-2003 I was living in the US, but riveted to the news, obviously. None of those experiences were any fun at all. In 2006 we lived in Haifa which was getting hit daily all during July. There were strikes within about a mile or two of our house, and we were running with the kids up and down to the miklat (bomb shelter) constantly. I've lived the violence there.

I really think we have to find a way to do better than that.

And, yup, I voted for Obama partly out of the conviction that Bush had done virtually nothing for 8 years in the region. Both sides there need a little "tough love" to get to a different place.

BTW - my voting record in Israel has been either Meretz (pretty far left) or Kadimah in 2006 (centrist). My politics are consistent in both countries.

(For the historical record, I always voted Liberal in Canada, but haven't voted there since the mid 1990s).

As to the "shoe" thing -- get real people. It's just a gag. There is no "shoe" offense in Israel society. Israelis all wear smelly sandals that they're happy to put up on your desk at the office. At least Obama is wearing nice shiny loafers, that's class, baby!

Why dont you go back and see what I was actually asking. I even poked fun at the conspiracy that would come from this, go back and read. The question I was asking was does he need to be aware of this culture issue. I wasnt aware of it but hey Im not the president. If I was asked the question I would say no. I had taken the whole Israelis being offended out of the picture, seems silly to me I made that clear.

you might have thetreble patting you on the back but lets be honest about what I was asking, what this really was about.

Not only that... but you have to actually show the person the bottom of your shoes for it to be an insult.

Like if they met in person, and Obama said, hey Netanyahu, this is what i think of you. And then showed him the bottom of his loafers.

Or if he had scanned the underside of his shoes during the conversation and simultaneously sent Netanyahu an e-mail message that read: Kiss these, pal.

This is just a photo of Barry in his office 5,000 miles away, talking on the phone.

i'm sure he was aware of it in the Arab cultural context...after the whole Iraqi shoe incident.

But in any event, they were on the phone & this is just a press photo... so yes... very silly, indeed!

By "this culture issue" the implication was that obama should be scrutinising what he does on the phone, because someone might be offended in the best tradition of the tabloids.

And in answer to your question - no I don't think obama should be aware of any of this stuff - he should fart loudly in houses of worship, offer his left hand and shoe soles to the Arab world, make holocaust jokes to Jews in Israel, do a Hitler impression in Germany and refer to the president of Mexico as a "wetback".

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

I disagree, alot of good conversations take place here.

I disagree, unfortunately. Rarely is there even anything on here worth commenting on between the infighting, the personal jabs and the silly topics.

But I digress and let the OP & Friends return to the original topic.
