I think it was two-fold. I think it was over WMDs (which more than one former Iraqi general has stated have been moved to Syria), and I think it is about showing despotic countries that they will be held accountable for their crimes and for supporting terror.

That being said, I do not like Bush. I think he has handled the war incorrectly, and I think that Rumsfeld needs to be fired.

Back to the discussion at hand, I find it abhorrent that people would call our soldiers "sociopaths" based on the actions of one crazy man.

If the guy did it, then he should go to prison for the rest of his life.

But how do you rationalise the fact that some officials still serving in this administration presided over arms deals to Iraq, some of which provided Saddam with some of the very same chemical/biological materials that we are now apparently so concerned about?

Iraq isn't the only despotic country, and it is far from the worst. The one's we choose to take action against is, I think, are a measure of our own self interest. There's nothing about this war (to me) to suggest it is significantly different in any way to the old european imperialist model.

This thread is too confusing to follow but I think that posters should be careful not to attack others. If I continue to get reports I will have to take some type of action to curb it. :\ We need to be careful to respect others beliefs and cultures despite what we may personally believe.

Its not confusing: Topic starts in a slight relations to the Iraq war. Fishdude hijacks thread and post his opposition to the war, and is branded by others an American hating foreigner.

I have seen a billion threads that follow this pattern--so its not really that confusing.

I do wish people would not stoop to name calling when they disaggree with others--well and yeah try and keep the threads on topic within the off topic, and elsewhere.

I'm sure you know the saying "In politics there are no permenant friends, nor permenant enemies, only permenant interests."

I agree with you that some of these officials brokered arms deals. That is a fact of life. It has, does and will happen in the future because the US likes others to do their dirty work when possible. Im not condoning it, but it does happen, and it will continue to happen because the government doesn't want the U.S. directly involved in a war.

I do believe that it does vary from European imperialism greatly, becuase the European model involved subjegation and replacement of the culture. The U.S. is merely changing the government, and is actively encouraging the Iraqi government to make its own decesions.

Actually that was a different thread. This one has been hijacked by accusations of anti-semitism on the part of one of the members, which has spilled over from another thread.
