In three days, I leave for Russia. Got an email today from Natalya, one major question.

WHAT SIZE ARE YOU FEET IN CENTIMETERS?

This is not a question I have ever been asked, not in my two marriages and not by any other FSU women. She wants to buy me slippers so I am accepted in her family home. I am so touched!

Duh, sorry, I had a brief moment of blankness. I can measure my feet, no problem. I just thought it was so thoughtful that this was her primary question for me before I came for visit.

Be careful measuring your own feet. We had my stepson do it, and he was 5 cm too long! (He also gave us his european shoe size.) My wife couldn't believe it, so she measured hers, too, and found that she was also 3 cm too long! It will be more reliable to translate your shoe size into a European shoe size.

Yep, nothing like getting yelled at at 4:10 in the AM and then having to go wash your feet before getting back into bed. You laugh now, but it WILL happen to you too.

What's awesome about that is Americans have no idea how big 10cm is so when you say, "Mine's about 10cm!" They just grin, nod, and say, "Woooow!"

I've been pretty good with the, "get the biggest ones you can find." Russians like everything snug compared to what we're used to here. Plus, you can't go wrong with tapochki that are too big because it leaves room for thick socks!

If you think cm make you sound big I prefer mm, triple digits baby woo hoo. Unless you make the mistake I made when I was talking with my future wife for the first time I forgot to convert pounds to kilos and told her I weighed 195, she said wow you must be really fat!!!

I never wore slippers my whole life and then the first time I was at my inlaws(before we were married) they gave me slippers to wear and now I ask all the time where they are. Plus my wifes aunt sent us camel hair socks from Ulan Ude last xmas, warmest socks of all time.

This year I got my chapka from my mother in law for my birthday, unfortunately its too hot to wear in the summer time.
