hi,

i need some advice, and i already know honesty is the best policy, but please just listen and advise. my fiance is 26 now but when he was a teenager he did some drugs. now, at the interview, what's the best way to address this issue when they ask about drug use? i don't want him to be denied for some mistakes he made 10 years ago and hasn't repeated since... i'm going to visit him wednesday and we need to talk about this while i'm there. thanks.

Are they asking about drug use? Depends who knows about this. Does he has convictions?

I've been wondering this myself. My fiance' used to smoke pot (but never did any "hard" drug) when he was a teenager. He hasn't done it in like 8 years though and now he doesn't even smoke cigarettes and he rarely drinks liquor, so I'm wondering if they will hold his silly teenaged pot-usage against him, or if it won't count since he was under 18 at last usage. I have a feeling that they will care more about whether the person looks like s/he currently abuses drugs (i.e. track marks on the arms, loads of chemicals in the blood, seeming high or recently high during the exam, etc.) I'm sure your fiance' doesn't look like a junkie, so try not to worry. He should answer all questions honestly though since if they find traces of anything in his blood (since many drugs are detectable for years afterward), and he says he's never done anything, it'll make trouble. If they don't ask, then don't tell

Good luck!

He has no convictions and the only people who know are his family and close friends. I know "they" ask about drugs, either at the medical or interview... Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I personally would think that they mean hard drugs, or whether or not you have had any problems with addiction or with the law. No I am not telling you to commit fraud but I think there are a whole lot of people in the world who have smoked weed at one point or another in their life.

Good luck!

Lucero went through the consulate in Colombia about a year ago. They did not ask a single question about drugs. At the medical they took some blood for HIV and a chest X ray that was more or less for Tuberculosis.

If they specifically ask the question I would answer truthfully but they really don't care what you did when you were a teenager. Even people that work for the governement are asked the question in the form of " In the last 5 or 10 years". Nobody really wants to open a can of worms by asking questions about anything you have ever done in your life.

I know this is very stressful to you but don't worry. It will not be an issue.

I have read on Immigrate 2 US that CDJ DOES ask about drug use and that the admission of "experimentation" during youth HAS resulted in problems. One woman posted the story of her husband - he admitted to having smoked pot as a teenager and that he occasionally drinks. As a result, the medical exam doctor branded him a "drug user" and alcoholic and he needed a waiver or some kind of additional paperwork to get around this.

I would STRONGLY recommend that no matter what your fiance's previous experiences have been, he answer NO to any question about drug use now or in his past.

BTW, the medical exam questions are not under oath - there is no fraud involved.

HI GUYS, THEY DO ASK ABOUT DRUGS USE ON THE MEDICAL, YEAH KIT KAT I HEARD ABOUT THAT CASE TOO, I MEAN YEAH THEY ASK YOU ABOUT THE USE OF DRUGS , LIKE FOR EXAMPLE THEY ASK ME IF I SMOKE, I USED TO BUT NOT ANYMORE SO I SAID NO, SHE DIDN'T SAY "HAVE YOU EVER.....", SO I THINK IS PERSONAL DECISION THE WAY YOU ANSWER. THAT'S WHAT I THINK ;);)

Just an FYI - I just came across that post on I2US about the interview in CDJ and drug use questions. This is from someone who has been through it - in the end, what you and your fiance decide to do is up to you. Good luck!

"One thing though, regarding drug use; if you admit to any drug use at the medical exam, then you are automatically classified as a drug abuser. (such a crock, when you think about how many people in the US use and abuse drugs) And I think you have to wait another 3 years after that before you can proceed with your waiver or whatever...so by all means, omit that!"

yes they ask about drugs at the medical, they also ask about drugs in Packet 3. DO NOT LIE TO IMMIGRATION.

KITKAT1, read the important disclaimer in red at the bottom of this page. I would not if i where you be telling people to be anything but truthful.

In my eyes, Pot is a drug... there was a person on here who said he had just tasted (put a dab on finger and thats it)a drug years back - he was denied.

There is also someone else on here that was asked to file a waiver cause they took a drug 25 years ago.

Of course its your call, but i would not and have never lied during this process.

If you read my post you'll see that I said "just an FYI" and "what you and your fiance decide to do is up to you". I did not recommend or suggest that anyone lie - I just provided information on what has happened, in the past, at the same consulate.

Seriously now. How many of us here did a little experimentation with drugs in high school and college. I'm not talking about the super harsh things either. Pot and alcohol is something I think a lot of us try at least once in life, that was it and we are not druggies or alcoholics. If everyone was really truthful how many of us and actually say NO to this question. Really, how will anyone know that when so and so was 16 they got high and drug once. Come on people. Now if you go to your medical and show up with drugs in your system, that's just your own dayum fault! Just my thought.

I agree.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
