Hi All-

I have a question that I hope I can get some intel on. My fiance will be moving from Kamloops, BC to Washington DC in March 2010. Obviously, she has a lot of personal items, couches, clothes, car, tv etc.,

Does anyone know the best option for her to move?

What does she have to do get her car here?

Does anyone know some cheap movers?

Any help will be much appreciated, thank you guys!! :)

Sell off and give away what she doesn't want/need to bring, then get estimates for the cost of moving through different moving companies or through UPack. Decide if you want to pay that price, sell off and give away more things (VBG) and make arrangements with the appropriate moving company. We investigated moving my things ourselves but figured it wasn't worth the hassle, especially as we did have to move 6 cats as well as 'stuff'. We hired a moving company and had absolutely no regrets. It cost a bit, but it was worth it.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

My sister lives in Kamloops BC, and I live in the DC region! Just like to pint that out,lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I agree with a lot of people on here...tell her to get rid of at least 3/4 of her stuff. I know it's going to be hard. I moved in the year before I moved to the US from a house, to an apartment, to a room in a house! When I moved, I ended up bringing 3 suitcases and 3 boxes. That was it. Even clothes....I gave away so many of them, and just started buying new stuff when I got here. Usually the US fiance is living somewhere where there is furniture and things, so unless something is "priceless" then I'd not bring it. You don't have to import everything as well. If 3 years from now you want a bureau or something that was left behind, you can bring it later as well. So, a word to the wise is...if you don't ABSOLUTELY need it, don't bring it. :P

I am moving from Calgary to Seattle, not as far as Kamloops to Washington, DC, but we rented a U-Haul and are towing my car behind the U-Haul truck. This will cost me $900 Canadian plus gas.

I looked into the U-Pack and PODS route, and that was going to cost me $2000 US, I think PODS was even more.

Do it gently, whatever you do - my now husband made that same suggestion and I just wasn't ready to throw out my hard earned stuff. Kind of made me ticked off actually that he was so cavalier about it. Now mind you I came from Southern ON to DC (co-inky dinkey eh? :) )

A Uhaul drive is a Uhaul drive - whether 50, 500 miles or more. Can you afford whatever method you choose to move her stuff if she keeps most of it? Do you have room for it when it arrives? Maybe throw out some of your stuff as well to make room and help her have some of her familiar belongings around. In the end some of my stuff was nicer then his so we did throw stuff out upon arriving.

If you're ok to divulge - where in the DC area - we're in Fairfax county - Centreville to be exact

That's exactly what I thought! I had to go back to your post and check the spelling because I had initially spelt it the Canadian/French way but then thought..... oh wait, it's probably spelt Centerville. So then I thought.... oh. maybe Udella spelt it wrong.

Agree with Kathryn and Marilyn, sell stuff off ("two bird" solution, reduces amount to move and gives some cash useful for trip).

Even the car, it may be better to sell it, take cash and buy replacement after moving to DC-area (lots of ads in "Express" and "Examiner"--both free--as well as WaPo).
